Consider two machines labeled Jacks or Better. Both show the same cards, deal five-card draw poker, and advertise the same royal flush. One pays 9 units for a full house and 6 for a flush. The other pays 8 and 5. To a casual player they may look like the same game. To a video poker player they are different products with different returns.

That is why pay tables matter: they determine what each final hand is worth. Strategy determines how often the available outcomes are reached. The combination of the two produces the game’s theoretical return.

The game name is not enough

“Jacks or Better,” “Bonus Poker,” and “Deuces Wild” describe game families. Within each family, casinos and manufacturers can offer multiple approved pay schedules. Players therefore use shorthand such as 9/6 Jacks or Better, where 9 is the full-house payout and 6 is the flush payout for a one-unit wager.

The shorthand is useful, but it is not a substitute for reading every row. Two games can share the same headline numbers while differing in four-of-a-kind bonuses, straight payouts, wild-card awards, or the top-coin royal flush.

The safest rule is to identify the exact pay table at the exact denomination you plan to play. Do not assume the schedule on the next machine, another denomination, or another multi-game menu is identical.

Why small payout cuts matter

The royal flush receives most of the attention because it is the largest standard prize. It is also rare. Full houses, flushes, straights, and other paying hands occur far more often. Cutting a single unit from a recurring hand removes value repeatedly across long play.

The top prize has not changed. The price of ordinary successful hands has.

Under optimal strategy and the standard maximum-coin royal schedule, commonly published return figures are about 99.54% for 9/6 Jacks or Better and 97.30% for 8/5 Jacks or Better. That difference is roughly 2.25 percentage points.

Suppose a player wagers $5 per hand for 600 hands. Total action is:

$5 × 600 = $3,000

Using the published return figures, the difference in expected cost is approximately:

$3,000 × (0.9954 − 0.9730) = $67.20

The actual 600-hand result can be a win or a much larger loss because video poker is volatile and the royal flush is rare. The calculation shows the long-run price difference created by the pay table; it does not forecast one session.

Pay table and strategy are linked

Video poker is not a passive reel game. The player chooses which cards to hold. A correct hold is the one with the highest expected value across all possible draws under that game’s pay schedule.

Change the payouts and some close decisions can change. A strategy chart made for 9/6 Jacks or Better is not automatically correct for 8/5 Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, or a progressive version. That does not mean a player should increase the wager beyond the budget. It means the game may be unsuitable at that denomination. A lower denomination at five coins can be economically better than a higher denomination at one coin, but only after comparing the complete pay table and actual dollar wager.

Progressive video poker creates another variation. The royal or another jackpot may rise while the lower rows remain fixed.
