A straight-up bet is a roulette wager on one exact wheel pocket. The chip is placed inside the box for the selected number—such as 17, 0 or 00—and wins only when the ball lands in that pocket.
Traditional roulette pays a winning straight-up wager at 35 to 1. The original stake is also returned. A $5 win therefore produces $175 profit and returns the $5 chip, for $180 back in total.
One chip covers one result
Straight-up is the narrowest standard roulette wager. Compare it with nearby inside bets:

Covering fewer numbers creates a lower hit frequency and a larger payout. It does not automatically create a worse house edge than the other standard bets on the same ordinary wheel. On standard single-zero or double-zero roulette, most conventional wagers share the wheel’s basic edge because their payouts are scaled from the number of pockets covered.
Probability depends on the wheel, not the chosen number
If every pocket is equally likely, the probability is:

Number 17 is not more likely than number 2. Zero is not less likely than a red number. A number that has been absent for 100 spins is still one pocket among the wheel’s total pockets on the next independent spin.
Why 35 to 1 is not true odds
On a single-zero wheel, one pocket wins and 36 pockets lose. The true odds against winning are therefore 36 to 1, yet the traditional payout is 35 to 1. On a double-zero wheel, true odds are 37 to 1 while the same standard payout remains 35 to 1.
For a $1 traditional straight-up bet:
Expected value
= P(win) × $35 profit − P(lose) × $1 loss
Single zero:
EV = (1/37 × $35) − (36/37 × $1)
= −$0.0270
Double zero:
EV = (1/38 × $35) − (37/38 × $1)
= −$0.0526
The average long-run cost is therefore about 2.70 cents per dollar on the single-zero wheel and 5.26 cents per dollar on the double-zero wheel. The single-number odds guide develops that math in the broader roulette context.
Covering several numbers does not create one combined bet
A player may place separate straight-up chips on several distinct numbers. If k different pockets are covered on a wheel with N pockets, the chance that one of the covered numbers wins is:
P(any covered number wins) = k ÷ N
Five different numbers on a 37-pocket wheel therefore hit with probability 5/37, or about 13.51%. The total stake is five times the chip amount, and only the chip on the winning number receives the straight-up payout.
Suppose five numbers each carry $2:
- Total wager:
$10 - One $2 straight-up hit:
$70profit plus the returned $2 chip - Four losing chips:
-$8 - Net result for the spin:
+$62
The larger coverage raises hit frequency because more pockets are selected. It does not remove the house edge. On an ordinary wheel where each straight-up has the same edge:
Expected loss on the group
= total straight-up action × wheel house edge
Players sometimes confuse five numbers adjacent on the wheel with five neighboring boxes on the layout. Wheel neighbors are not necessarily next to one another on the betting grid. Unless a dedicated racetrack or neighbor-bet area is offered, each number must be placed correctly as its own straight-up wager.
Chip position is the wager contract
At a live table, a chip in the center of number 17 means straight-up 17. Move it onto the line between 17 and 20 and it becomes a split bet. Move it to the common corner of four boxes and it covers four numbers.
That small distance is why placement disputes occur. Official Massachusetts roulette rules state that the player is responsible for correct positioning and that wagers are settled according to their location on the layout when the ball comes to rest. Practical live-table habits are simple:
- Place the chip fully inside the chosen number box.
- Do not reach through the layout after “no more bets.”
- Ask the dealer to repeat a called wager if you cannot see its placement.
- Remember the value assigned to your roulette color before play begins.
Check the paytable on modern variants
“Straight-up” describes the coverage, not a universal payout across every branded version. Traditional roulette normally pays 35 to 1, but multiplier variants may reduce the base straight-up payout and attach random enhanced payouts to selected numbers.
Nevada’s approved rules for Lightning Roulette Double Zero, for example, describe a 38-pocket wheel with a configured base straight-up payout of 29 to 1 or 30 to 1, plus randomly selected “Lucky” numbers that can receive larger multipliers. The correct questions are therefore:
- How many pockets are on this wheel?
- What is the base payout for an ordinary hit?
- Does the game fund multipliers by reducing the normal payout?
- Are special rules shown clearly before the wager?
A straight-up bet is easy to define: one number, one winning pocket. Evaluating it requires the wheel count and actual paytable, not the size of the headline jackpot.
