Table-game drop, win, and hold describe different parts of casino performance:
- Drop is the value recorded as entering the table-game accounting process, usually through the drop box or approved cashless and credit procedures.
- Win is the casino’s reconciled gaming result after table inventory, fills, credits, drop, and permitted transfers are accounted for.
- Hold is actual win divided by drop.
These figures are connected, but they are not interchangeable. Drop is not total wagering. Hold is not house edge. One day’s win is not proof that a game is correctly priced or well managed.

The exact accounting components depend on the jurisdiction and the casino’s approved internal controls. A report should state its definitions instead of assuming every property uses the same treatment for markers, cashless transfers, foreign chips, promotional instruments, or chips purchased at the cage.
How table win is reconciled
A common regulatory form of the calculation is:
Table win = closing bankroll + credits + drop - opening bankroll - fills
Additional approved cashless or transfer items may be included where applicable.
The terms mean:
- opening bankroll: the chip inventory assigned to the table when the accounting period begins;
- fills: chips sent from the cage to increase the table inventory;
- credits: chips removed from the table and returned to the cage;
- closing bankroll: chips remaining when the table or shift closes;
- drop: counted cash, evidence of credit, or other approved value recorded through the table’s drop process.
Fills do not represent player revenue. They are inventory transfers into the table, so they are subtracted. Credits are inventory transfers out of the table, so they are added back when reconstructing the result.
Worked reconciliation
Suppose a blackjack table records:

The table did not “win the drop.” It finished with fewer chips than the resources supplied to it because players left holding or redeeming chips. The drop, inventory movement, and closing count must be reconciled together.
A negative answer is possible. If the table paid more chips to players than it recovered through play and drop, the period shows a table loss.
Hold percentage
Actual hold is:
Hold percentage = table win ÷ table drop × 100
Using the example:
Hold = $18,000 ÷ $60,000 × 100 = 30%
Thirty percent does not mean blackjack has a 30% house edge. It means the casino’s actual result for this reporting period equaled 30% of the recorded drop.
Hold can be affected by:
- how long players keep wagering after buying in;
- whether chips were bought at the table or brought from the cage;
- credit and marker procedures;
- chips carried from an earlier session;
- player wins and losses during the measurement period;
- table mix and betting limits;
- cut-off time and accounting boundaries;
- normal short-term variance.
A player can buy $1,000 in chips and wager the same chips repeatedly. Drop may remain $1,000 while handle becomes many thousands. That is why hold can be far larger than the game’s edge.
Drop is not handle
Handle or turnover is total amount wagered. If a player makes 100 wagers of $100, handle is $10,000 even if the player bought in only once for $1,000.
At slot machines, coin-in records each wager directly. Traditional table games usually do not create an exact electronic record of every base wager. Casinos estimate table action through ratings:
Estimated handle = average bet × decisions per hour × hours played
For example:
$100 × 70 hands × 2 hours = $14,000 estimated handle
If the estimated house edge for the player’s game and decisions is 1%, theoretical win is:
Theoretical win = $14,000 × 1% = $140
That $140 theoretical value can coexist with a $1,000 drop, a $600 actual win, or a $2,000 actual table loss. They answer different questions.

Why hold moves so much
Hold is a ratio with a volatile numerator. Actual win can swing sharply while drop changes little.
Consider two baccarat tables:

The same drop produced opposite results. Table B may have had one large winning player. Table A may have had many players recycle chips until losing them. One day does not reveal whether either table was dealt correctly, rated accurately, or priced well.
Hold can also exceed 100% in unusual but legitimate circumstances. A player may lose chips purchased earlier or at another cage location while little new value enters the current table’s drop. Conversely, a large cash buy-in followed by a quick player win can create high drop and negative win.
That is why experienced managers compare:
- daily, weekly, monthly, and rolling-period hold;
- actual win against theoretical win;
- drop per table hour;
- win and theoretical win per occupied table hour;
- game, limit, daypart, and customer segment;
- hold with and without exceptional high-value play.
The accounting control behind the metric
The win formula is only useful when every component is controlled.
Opening and closing inventories should be independently recorded and verified under the property’s internal controls. Fills and credits need sequential documentation and matching cage records. Drop boxes need secure identification, removal, transport, count, and reconciliation. Marker and cashless activity must be captured in the approved system.
Federal minimum internal-control standards illustrate the reconciliation logic. The table-game gross-revenue formula in 25 CFR 542.19 uses closing bankroll, credits, drop, opening bankroll, fills, and cashless transfers. The purpose is not to create an intuitive manager’s estimate. It is to make the accounting result traceable.
A report that says “win was $18,000” should be reproducible from source documents. If the table inventory, fill slip, credit slip, or drop count is wrong, the metric is wrong even if the arithmetic is correct.

Table games operations
Operations uses drop and win to monitor demand, staffing, table limits, game mix, and unusual results. Managers should not reward or blame a shift solely for actual win. Procedure quality, pace, ratings, game protection, and customer service are more controllable.
Finance and casino accounting
Accounting uses the reconciled win calculation to record gaming revenue. Count-room totals, cage transfers, table inventories, and system transactions must agree.
Marketing and hosts
Marketing may compare actual loss with theoretical value, but comps should not be based on one volatile result alone. A player can win today and still generate positive long-run theoretical value.
Surveillance and compliance
Unusual hold can trigger review, but it is an indicator rather than a verdict. Surveillance may examine large payouts, buy-ins, fills, credits, rating gaps, chip movements, and procedural exceptions.
The federal definition of actual hold percentage explicitly relates win to drop or coin-in. That regulatory definition is a useful reminder that hold is an accounting ratio, not a probability attached to one bet.
Common analytical mistakes
Comparing hold directly with house edge
House edge prices wagers. Hold relates actual win to drop. The denominator is different, and repeated wagering separates them further.
Ranking managers by short-period win
Actual win contains variance. A well-run table can lose for a shift. A poorly controlled table can win.
Treating drop as customer loss
Drop measures recorded value entering the table process. Players can leave with chips, recycle them, buy elsewhere, or use credit. Customer loss requires a broader account-level view.
Ignoring game and limit mix
A 20% hold at low-limit blackjack and a 20% hold at high-limit baccarat may represent very different volatility, concentration, labor, and customer exposure.
Using one property’s definition everywhere
Internal controls and regulatory definitions vary. Reports must disclose how drop, promotional chips, markers, cashless wagers, and inter-property chips are treated.
Same hold, different business result
Hold alone cannot rank two games because it ignores labor, speed, capacity, and the amount of capital required to support the table.
Suppose two tables both report 20% hold:

The percentages match, but the exposure and contribution do not. Baccarat’s result may also be concentrated in one customer, making tomorrow’s outcome more volatile. Blackjack may use more labor hours and seats to produce a smaller win. A manager needs both the ratio and the scale.
Now reverse the result. If baccarat loses $100,000, its hold becomes -20%, but that does not automatically mean the game should close. Management should compare the loss with theoretical exposure, customer history, game-protection evidence, and the long-run value of the segment.
A good review therefore moves in this order:
- confirm the accounting reconciliation;
- identify exceptional players or transactions;
- compare actual win with theoretical win and expected variance;
- examine operating drivers such as hours, occupancy, pace, and limits;
- decide whether the result requires action or simply more observations.
Questions that test drop quality
Before interpreting a hold percentage, ask whether the denominator is complete and comparable:
- Were all drop boxes counted in the correct gaming date?
- Were markers and cashless transfers posted to the correct table?
- Did players arrive with chips bought at the cage or carried from an earlier session?
- Were promotional or non-negotiable chips included under the approved definition?
- Did a table move, merge, or change identification during the period?
- Were fills and credits matched to cage copies and table signatures?
- Was a late close or early opening split between accounting dates?
These questions matter because a small denominator error can create a large hold distortion. If reported win is $20,000 and drop is understated from $100,000 to $80,000, reported hold rises from 20% to 25% without any change in gaming performance.
Correct hold = $20,000 ÷ $100,000 = 20%
Misstated hold = $20,000 ÷ $80,000 = 25%
The arithmetic is correct in both lines. The second conclusion is wrong because the source data is incomplete.
