Why does time played matter for comps?

The short answer

Time played matters because the casino is estimating total rated action. Duration turns an average wager into an approximate number of decisions and therefore into theoretical loss, which can support comp decisions.

A $50 average bet does not describe a casino session by itself. It could mean one hand, ten minutes, or an entire evening. Time played gives the rating scale. It helps convert the average wager into an estimate of how much action occurred and how much theoretical value the play created.

That is why hosts and floor supervisors care about duration even when the player’s buy-in or actual loss is much larger. Comps are usually connected to expected value from tracked play, not simply to the most dramatic number from the trip.

Time is a multiplier, not an independent reward

A player does not normally earn a valuable comp merely by occupying a chair. Duration matters because it multiplies other rating factors:

  • average bet;
  • decisions or rounds per hour;
  • type of game and rule package;
  • estimated house advantage;
  • the property’s reinvestment policy.

A long session at a $5 wager can generate less theoretical value than a shorter session at $200. A fast slot session can produce more measured action than a slow table session of the same duration. Time has meaning only in relation to the action taking place during it.

The standard relationship is:

Theoretical loss = Average bet × Decisions per hour × Hours played × House edge

Where:

  • average bet is the casino’s estimate of the normal amount at risk per decision;
  • decisions per hour is the estimated pace of the game;
  • hours played is the rated duration;
  • house edge is the expected casino advantage for the relevant game, wager mix, rules, and assumed player behavior;
  • theoretical loss is a long-run expectation, not the amount the player actually lost.

A comp estimate may then use:

Estimated comp budget = Theoretical loss × Reinvestment rate

The reinvestment rate is a management decision and can differ by property, market, customer segment, comp type, and campaign. It is not a universal entitlement.

A ten-minute high bet can rate below a steady session

Assume two players are rated on the same blackjack game at an estimated 60 decisions per hour and 0.5% house edge.

Player A averages $100 for 10 minutes:

$100 × 60 × (10 ÷ 60) × 0.005 = $5 theoretical loss

Player B averages $25 for 3 hours:

$25 × 60 × 3 × 0.005 = $22.50 theoretical loss

Player A has the larger average bet. Player B creates more estimated total action because the wager is repeated for much longer. At a purely illustrative 20% reinvestment rate, the two estimates would support about $1 and $4.50 respectively.

Real casino ratings may use different speeds, edges, rounding rules, minimum thresholds, and discretionary adjustments. The example is meant to show why duration changes the answer, not to predict a specific offer.

The casino is rating active play, not the story of the session

Players often describe a trip through buy-in and outcome:

“I bought in for $2,000 and lost $900. Why was my comp small?”

The casino may see a different record: the player made a few large bets, reduced to the minimum, sat out several hands, left after 25 minutes, and was not properly identified until late in the session. The actual loss is real, but it may not describe repeatable expected value.

Another player might buy in for $500, play a consistent rated wager for four hours, finish close to even, and receive a stronger offer. The casino has a longer and more stable record from which to estimate future value.

Actual loss can influence service decisions, loss rebates, host judgment, or exceptional review at some properties. It is still not the same measure as theoretical loss. One is an outcome; the other is an estimate based on exposure.

Recorded time is not always exact time in action

At table games, the player-rating record may depend on employee entry, system prompts, or electronic table technology. Start and stop times can be missed or rounded. A player may leave the table without closing the rating, move seats, take a break, or play through a period when the game is stopped.

Casinos therefore try to distinguish elapsed clock time from meaningful action. The exact method varies. A property may account for table pace, interruptions, hands not played, game changes, or a rating reopened after a break. Slot systems usually have more direct transaction data because coin-in is captured electronically when the loyalty card is active, but even there, inserted-card time is not necessarily the same as continuous wagering.

Why hosts ask how long you played

A host is often trying to resolve one of three questions:

  1. Was the recorded rating complete? A missing session can materially change a trip estimate.
  2. Was the play sustained? One large wager does not establish a normal average.
  3. Does the request fit the value? A room, meal, or discretionary comp needs support under the property’s policy.

Time helps the host compare the request with the tracked relationship. It also affects future offers. Marketing systems may view a three-hour trip differently from a ten-minute stop even when the two players briefly reach the same wager level.

The formula is documented in real regulatory work

A Massachusetts Gaming Commission licensing investigation described a theoretical-win calculation using average bet, time or duration of play, decisions per hour, and game type or house advantage. That source does not create one mandatory comp formula for every casino. It confirms the underlying operational logic: time is one factor used to turn a wager level into theoretical activity.

Longer play can improve the rating while worsening the player’s position

This is the part most comp discussions omit. If all other factors remain constant, more rated time increases theoretical loss. The casino may return a fraction of that additional expected value through points, rooms, food, free play, or offers. The returned value is usually smaller than the expected cost that supports it.

Suppose one extra hour at a $50 average bet, 60 decisions per hour, and 1% house edge creates:

$50 × 60 × 1 × 0.01 = $30 theoretical loss

At a hypothetical 20% reinvestment rate, that hour might support about:

$30 × 0.20 = $6 of comp value

Playing an unplanned extra hour to “earn” $6 means accepting roughly $30 of additional theoretical loss under those assumptions. The player can win during the hour, but the comp does not change the expected cost.

What time played does—and does not—tell the casino

Time played helps estimate exposure. It does not prove loyalty, good strategy, profitability on the current trip, or future behavior. A long session can be low-value, poorly rated, or inconsistent. A short session can still be valuable at sufficient stakes. A casino may also weigh trip frequency, game choice, hotel demand, offer use, credit behavior, and broader customer history.

The practical answer is to let comps follow play that was already affordable and planned. Confirm that the session is rated, but do not extend it merely to improve the rating. A complimentary benefit can reduce the cost of a trip; it cannot make added negative-expectation action free.

Play smart. Gambling involves real financial risk. If the game stops being entertainment, it's time to stop playing.
