Why do more decisions per hour cost more?

The short answer

More decisions per hour usually cost more because they increase total action. With the same average bet and house edge, doubling the number of resolved wagers doubles expected loss.

The full answer

A player does not pay the house edge once for entering the casino. The edge is applied to the money wagered across all hands, spins, rolls, or other resolved bets. More decisions per hour usually mean more total action, so the expected cost rises even when the stake and game rules stay unchanged.

The central relationship is:

  • (L) is expected loss per hour;
  • (d) is the number of wagered decisions resolved per hour;
  • (b) is the average amount exposed per decision;
  • (e) is the house edge as a decimal.

If any one of those inputs rises while the others remain constant, expected hourly loss rises with it.

Two games with the same edge

Suppose two games both have a 1.5% house edge and the player wagers $10 on every decision.

The faster game is not mathematically worse per dollar. Each wager still carries the same 1.5% edge. It costs more per hour because six times as much money passes through the game.

Short-term results will not follow those amounts neatly. The 50-decision session can lose much more than $7.50, and the 300-decision session can finish ahead. Expected loss is the average over a very large number of comparable sessions, not a spending schedule.

Decisions, rounds, and wagers are not always the same thing

“Decisions per hour” is convenient language, but the unit must be defined correctly.

In blackjack, one round may contain one main wager, a side bet, a double, and perhaps several split hands. In roulette, one spin can resolve many chips placed on different propositions. In craps, several wagers may remain working while others resolve on the next roll. A slot spin may include multiple lines or ways, but the displayed total bet is normally the useful amount of action for that spin.

For mixed wagers, calculate expected loss separately and add the results:

where each (i) represents a distinct wager type with its own frequency, average stake, and edge.

Imagine 60 blackjack rounds per hour with:

  • a $20 main wager at a hypothetical 0.6% edge;
  • a $5 side bet at a hypothetical 8% edge on every round.

Main wager expected loss:

[ 60 \times 20 \times 0.006=$7.20 ]

Side-bet expected loss:

[ 60 \times 5 \times 0.08=$24.00 ]

Total expected hourly loss:

[ 7.20+24.00=$31.20 ]

The optional $5 wager is smaller, but its higher edge makes it the larger source of expected cost. Counting only “60 hands” hides that the player placed 120 separate initial wagers.

Why bankroll and total action are different

A $200 bankroll can generate far more than $200 of action because returned stakes and winnings are wagered again. Consider a player who alternates wins and losses while making 100 bets of $10. The player’s total action is $1,000 even though no additional $1,000 was brought to the table.

The buy-in controls how much money is available at a moment. Total action measures how much wagering volume the bankroll produces over time. Expected loss is priced from the second number.

A player may accurately say, “I never bet more than $10,” yet still create several thousand dollars of action during a long, fast session.

Pace is only one part of hourly cost

A slow game is not automatically cheap, and a fast game is not automatically expensive. Bet size and edge can outweigh pace.

Compare these hypothetical sessions:

The calculation prevents slogans from replacing analysis. “Slots are fast,” “table games are slow,” or “this game has a low edge” may be relevant, but none provides the hourly cost without the other inputs.

That is also why a low-edge game can still consume a bankroll quickly. Raising the stake, playing longer, adding side bets, or increasing pace can more than offset a favorable percentage. Why Low House Edge Does Not Mean Low Cost develops that distinction.

What changes the number of decisions

Pace varies inside the same game. It can be affected by:

  • number of occupied seats;
  • dealer or game speed;
  • player decision time;
  • chip handling and payouts;
  • side-bet verification;
  • disputes or procedural pauses;
  • automatic shufflers or electronic interfaces;
  • autoplay or rapid-repeat features where permitted;
  • breaks taken by the player.

A published hands-per-hour estimate is therefore a planning assumption, not a guarantee. A full blackjack table usually deals fewer rounds to each player than a heads-up table. A roulette game with many complex payouts may run more slowly than an electronic version. Craps pace can vary with the number and type of wagers on the layout.

For personal budgeting, a conservative estimate is better than pretending to know the exact pace. Count a sample of actual decisions or use a plausible range, then calculate both ends.

Pace affects experience as well as mathematics

Fast play compresses feedback. Bets are placed, resolved, and repeated with less time to notice cumulative spend or reconsider the next wager. The mathematical effect is higher action per hour; the behavioral effect can be a more continuous rhythm.

The UK Gambling Commission’s review of product characteristics and gambling risk identifies speed and frequency among the design features relevant to risk and notes regulatory changes intended to reduce play intensity. That does not mean every fast game causes harm or every slow game is safe. It means pace deserves attention beyond the house-edge calculation.

A break has a direct mathematical effect because it reduces the number of wagers placed. It also creates a point at which the player can check time, spending, and whether the original plan is still being followed.

The casino’s view: throughput, not a guaranteed win

Casinos use pace as one input in estimating theoretical win and table productivity. A simplified table-game estimate may combine average wager, decisions or hands, house advantage, time played, and occupancy. This is an expectation across volume, not a claim that the casino wins every hour or from every player.

Actual results can move sharply around theory. A high-limit table may lose money for the casino during a session despite substantial action. Over many comparable decisions, however, greater wagering volume gives the underlying expectation more opportunities to emerge.

Operationally, faster is not always better. Excessive speed can increase dealer errors, missed procedures, player complaints, payout mistakes, and game-protection exposure. A well-run game balances accurate procedure, service, and reasonable pace rather than treating every extra hand as free revenue.

Use an hourly range rather than one precise forecast

Suppose you expect to make between 80 and 120 wagers per hour, with an average stake of $15 and a 2% edge.

Low estimate:

High estimate:

[ 120 \times 15 \times 0.02=$36 ]

A practical budget would treat the expected hourly cost as a range of roughly $24 to $36 under those assumptions. It should also recognize variance: the actual cash result can be far outside the range.

The expected-loss calculator can perform the same exercise, but its output is only as reliable as the bet, pace, time, and edge entered.

What to do with the number

Decisions per hour become useful when they change a choice. A player can:

  • reduce the amount wagered per decision;
  • decline an additional side bet;
  • choose a slower format with otherwise comparable rules;
  • set a time limit and include breaks;
  • stop using a win as permission to increase pace;
  • compare games by expected dollars per hour rather than edge alone.

The house edge remains the best percentage measure of price per dollar wagered. Expected loss turns that price into money. Decisions per hour connect both concepts to time.

More decisions do not force a particular session result. They increase the amount exposed to the game’s pricing. With the same stake and edge, more exposure means a higher long-run cost.

Play smart. Gambling involves real financial risk. If the game stops being entertainment, it's time to stop playing.
