Why does the house edge change?

The short answer

House edge changes when the probabilities of results, the payouts attached to those results, or the strategy assumptions change. Bet size, pace, and session length affect dollar cost but do not change the percentage edge of an unchanged wager.

House edge changes when the mathematical contract of the wager changes. That can happen through a different payout, an added or removed outcome, a rule affecting how often each result occurs, a commission, a paytable, or a strategy assumption.

The game name is not enough. “Blackjack,” “roulette,” “video poker,” and even a branded side bet can each exist in several versions with different expected values.

The edge comes from probabilities and net payouts

For a wager with several possible results:

Expected value = Σ(Probability of result × Net result)
House edge = −Expected value, expressed as a percentage of the initial wager

If either part changes, the edge can change:

  • Probability changes: a rule adds a zero, changes a draw rule, uses a different deck composition, or alters how a dealer qualifies.
  • Payout changes: a win pays less, a push becomes a loss, a commission is deducted, or a bonus paytable is shortened.

If neither probabilities nor payouts change, the house edge per wager does not change merely because the player bets more or plays faster.

Roulette shows the mechanism cleanly

A straight-up roulette number commonly pays 35 to 1.

On a double-zero wheel there are 38 pockets. One wins and 37 lose:

EV = (1/38 × 35) + (37/38 × −1)
EV = −2/38
EV ≈ −0.05263

The house edge is about 5.26%.

On a single-zero wheel there are 37 pockets with the same 35-to-1 payout:

EV = (1/37 × 35) + (36/37 × −1)
EV = −1/37
EV ≈ −0.02703

The edge is about 2.70%.

Nothing mystical happened. Removing one losing pocket improved the probability while the payout stayed the same.

A special rule such as la partage or en prison can change the edge on even-money bets without changing the wheel. The rule changes what happens when zero appears, so it changes the net-result distribution for those wagers.

A payout change can alter an otherwise familiar game

Blackjack illustrates the payout side. A natural blackjack on a $100 wager pays:

  • $150 at 3 to 2;
  • $120 at 6 to 5.

That is a $30 difference each time the player is paid for the same winning hand. Because naturals occur repeatedly over a large sample, the reduced payout worsens expected value.

Other blackjack rules can also change the modeled edge:

  • dealer stands or hits soft 17;
  • doubling allowed on any two cards or only selected totals;
  • doubling after a split allowed or prohibited;
  • surrender available or unavailable;
  • aces resplittable or restricted;
  • number of decks and how deeply the shoe is dealt.

These changes do not all have the same size or direction. The correct comparison uses the complete rule package, not one attractive feature in isolation.

Dealer rules and qualification rules matter

In baccarat, the drawing rules define the probabilities of Player, Banker, and Tie. A no-commission version may change the treatment of a Banker win on a particular total rather than simply removing the standard commission. The familiar “Banker” label therefore does not guarantee the same edge.

In carnival games, dealer qualification can determine whether one wager wins, pushes, or remains unresolved while another wager is paid. Changing the qualification threshold or bonus paytable can alter expected value even though the hand rankings look unchanged.

In craps, changing a payout from true odds to a rounded-down payout creates an edge. Changing the treatment of 12 on Don’t Pass can also change the math. The layout language matters because each box describes a separate contract.

Paytables are rules written as numbers

Video poker makes the issue visible. Two machines may both say “Jacks or Better” while paying different amounts for a full house or flush. The card probabilities may be identical, but the return attached to those hands is not.

The same principle applies to:

  • slot RTP configurations;
  • side-bet paytables;
  • progressive jackpot schedules;
  • bonus multipliers;
  • maximum-payout caps;
  • “to 1” versus “for 1” wording.

A paytable is not decoration. It is part of the rule set used in the expected-value calculation.

Strategy can change the player’s effective edge

Some published house-edge figures assume correct or defined strategy. If a player makes different decisions, the actual expected value of that play changes.

Examples include:

  • hitting or standing incorrectly in blackjack;
  • discarding the wrong cards in video poker;
  • raising or folding incorrectly in a poker-derived carnival game;
  • choosing an optional insurance or side wager with separate mathematics.

This distinction is useful:

  • Game edge under stated strategy: the mathematical result of the published model.
  • Player’s effective edge: the result after the player’s actual decisions are included.

The casino did not alter the table between two hands. The decision path changed the distribution of outcomes available to the player.

Rules can vary by market, denomination, or platform

A game theme can be distributed with multiple approved configurations. A slot cabinet may offer different RTP settings to different operators or markets. An online game may disclose an RTP that differs from a similarly named physical game. A higher-denomination version may use a different paytable, but that is not guaranteed.

The same branded table game can also be offered with optional side bets, progressive links, or local rule adjustments. Compare the rules in front of you rather than assuming that a number quoted for another casino applies.

The UK Gambling Commission’s random-outcome standard requires games to operate according to described rules and prevailing payouts and says changes to rules, paytables, or parameters that affect winnings or likelihood must be controlled and brought to customers’ attention. The exact regulatory process varies by jurisdiction, but the principle is useful: a mathematical change is a real game change.

What does not change the house edge

Several factors change the player’s experience or expected dollars lost without changing the edge of an unchanged wager.

Bet size

A $100 wager has ten times the expected dollar loss of a $10 wager at the same edge. The percentage remains the same.

Pace

More decisions per hour increase expected hourly loss because the same edge is applied more often. Pace does not alter expected loss per dollar wagered.

Session length

Longer play creates more action. It does not change the mathematical price of each identical bet.

A winning or losing streak

Recent results do not rewrite the paytable or probabilities. They change the player’s balance, not the edge.

Table occupancy

A crowded table may slow play. That can reduce action per hour while leaving the edge on each settled wager unchanged.

This separation prevents a common mistake: calling every change in cost a change in house edge.

Progressive meters need careful wording

A growing progressive prize can increase the expected return of a wager because one possible payout becomes larger. The base rules may remain fixed while the current meter changes the value of the jackpot outcome.

That does not mean a visibly large jackpot automatically creates a positive expectation. The probability of winning, contribution rate, reset value, eligibility conditions, and any shared network rules are all needed. The meter is one changing input, not a complete calculation.

How to compare two versions properly

Use this order:

  1. Identify the exact wager, not only the game name.
  2. Record every possible win, loss, and push condition.
  3. Check the net payout, including commissions and returned stakes.
  4. Note decision rules and the strategy assumed by any published figure.
  5. Separate main bets from side bets and progressives.
  6. Compare the same metric: house edge, RTP, or element of risk.
  7. Treat pace and bet size as cost variables after the percentage comparison.

The direct answer is that house edge changes only when the wager’s expected value changes. Rules and payouts can do that. Playing faster cannot.
