A machine that wins $1,050 per day is not automatically a better floor asset than one winning $850. The first may carry a high lease fee, occupy premium space, suffer frequent downtime, depend on expensive free play, or serve a player segment the floor cannot replace. Slot performance requires a connected set of measures, not a leaderboard sorted by win.
The strongest dashboard separates four questions:
- How much wagering activity occurred?
- How did actual results compare with the approved math?
- Was the machine available and used?
- What contribution remained after direct costs?
The accounting core
Coin-in
Coin-in is the total value wagered. Replayed credits are counted again, so coin-in is not the same as cash inserted or the player's bankroll.
Coin-In = Sum of All Wagers Recorded by the Device
A player can insert $100 and generate $600 of coin-in by repeatedly wagering returned credits.
Statistical win
Statistical win is the approved performance-report result from device drop and payout activity. Its exact treatment of jackpots, bonuses, promotional awards, cashless transfers, and tax reporting depends on the control framework.
Actual hold
Actual Hold % = Statistical Win / Coin-In
If a machine records $450,000 coin-in and $31,500 statistical win:
Actual Hold = $31,500 / $450,000 = 7.00%
Actual hold describes the measured period. It does not replace the paytable's theoretical hold.
Theoretical hold and RTP
For a simple paytable relationship:
Theoretical Hold % = 100% - RTP
A 93.8% RTP implies a 6.2% theoretical hold before separately treated items.
The variance report managers need
The difference between actual and theoretical hold should be shown in percentage points and dollars:
Hold Variance = Actual Hold % - Theoretical Hold %
Projected Dollar Variance = Coin-In × Hold Variance
Using the example:
Hold Variance = 7.00% - 6.20% = +0.80 percentage points
Projected Dollar Variance = $450,000 × 0.008 = +$3,600
The positive figure means actual statistical win exceeded the theoretical amount by $3,600 for that period. It does not prove that the machine was configured above theory. Ordinary game variance, jackpot timing, data treatment, or configuration errors can all affect the comparison.

Consider one cabinet with these results:

The basic measures are:
Win per Unit per Day = $31,500 / 30 = $1,050
Uptime = (720 - 18) / 720 = 97.50%
Average Wager = $450,000 / 92,000 = about $4.89
Direct Contribution = $31,500 - $4,500 - $1,200 - $800 = $25,000
Contribution per Day = $25,000 / 30 = about $833.33
The machine's WPUPD looks excellent, but contribution is $216.67 per day lower after the listed direct costs. Neither number includes every shared expense or displacement effect, so management should label the measure accurately rather than calling it final profit.
Availability and demand are separate
Uptime
Uptime % = Available Operating Time / Scheduled Operating Time
Uptime identifies whether the product was ready to earn. A machine can have low coin-in because demand is weak or because it was unavailable. Those require different actions.
Utilization or occupancy
A property may estimate utilization from carded sessions, games played, active minutes, seat sensors, or time-sampled observation.
Utilization % = Active Play Time / Available Time
The data source must be stated. “Occupancy” based on carded sessions will undercount uncarded play; “active time” may define idle gaps differently across systems.
Games per active hour
Games per Active Hour = Games Played / Active Play Hours
This can reveal changes in wager pace, game design, player behavior, or interface friction. It should not be turned into a target that encourages faster harmful play.
Portfolio measures
Win per unit per day (WPUPD)
WPUPD = Statistical Win / Units / Days
WPUPD is easy to compare but sensitive to denomination, location, operating hours, machine count, and reporting period.
Win share versus floor share
Floor Share = Units in Segment / Total Units
Win Share = Segment Win / Total Slot Win
Share Gap = Win Share - Floor Share
A segment occupying 12% of units and producing 18% of win has a +6 percentage-point share gap. That can justify investigation, not automatic expansion. New units may cannibalize the same players, and the current location may be unusually strong.
Floor par
Floor par is a weighted theoretical hold measure. Weighting by coin-in is more meaningful than averaging machine percentages equally because high-volume devices contribute more to the floor's expected result.
Weighted Floor Par = Σ(Coin-In × Theoretical Hold) / Total Coin-In
Win per square foot or zone
Floor Yield = Statistical Win / Assigned Floor Area
This helps evaluate banks, pods, wide-body cabinets, and non-gaming space, but area allocation must be consistent.
Costs and promotions
A machine can generate strong statistical win while weak economics hide below the surface. Relevant direct items can include:
- lease or participation fees;
- progressive contributions;
- branded content fees;
- free play or bonus expense;
- jackpot labor and payment processing;
- maintenance parts and service calls;
- cash-handling or ticket expense;
- financing or depreciation for capital decisions.
Do not subtract every cost from statistical win and still label the result “slot win.” Create a separate contribution measure with a documented cost scope.
Promotions require an incremental test:
Incremental Contribution = Incremental Win - Incremental Promotion Cost - Incremental Service Cost
Comparing promotion days only with the previous week can be misleading. Day of week, seasonality, hotel occupancy, events, and player overlap may explain the difference.
Service and control metrics
Revenue measures should be paired with operating quality:

Fast service that produces repeat faults is not good performance. High uptime achieved by disabling features or postponing controlled maintenance is also not good performance.
Comparison rules
Before ranking machines, normalize for:
- denomination and average wager;
- cabinet and game family;
- paytable and theoretical hold;
- location and traffic path;
- operating days and downtime;
- new-installation or conversion period;
- progressive status;
- carded and uncarded player mix;
- lease, participation, and promotional treatment.
A high-denomination cabinet should not be compared with a penny cabinet using only coin-in. A new bank should not be judged from three days of opening traffic. A jackpot-heavy game should not be declared broken after one volatile month.
Decision sequence
A disciplined slot review moves in this order:
- Validate meters, configuration, dates, and cost treatment.
- Compare actual hold with theoretical hold over suitable periods.
- Separate availability from demand.
- Compare like-for-like cohorts and zones.
- Identify the business hypothesis: move, convert, repair, expand, reduce, or leave unchanged.
- Test the change and record the result.

The management rule
No slot KPI is meaningful without its denominator and scope. Coin-in measures wagering volume. Statistical win measures the recorded result. Actual-versus-theoretical variance tests performance against the approved math. Uptime and utilization explain opportunity. Contribution introduces direct economics. The decision should come from the pattern, not the largest number on the report.
