Game Mix

Game mix is the combination of casino games offered on the floor or online and how that blend supports revenue, risk, and player demand.

A roulette game has a waiting list while three nearby blackjack tables are empty. Across the room, a popular slot title is full, but the older bank beside it has almost no play. These are game-mix signals.

Game mix is the way a casino divides its capacity among products: slots, blackjack, baccarat, roulette, craps, poker-style games, electronic tables, denominations, table limits, and game variants. The term includes more than which games exist. It also includes how many units are offered, when they open, what limits they carry, and which customer groups they are meant to serve.

A good mix gives players reasonable access to the games they want while using floor space, staff, bankroll, surveillance coverage, and capital productively. There is no universal “best” mix. The right answer changes by property, daypart, season, event calendar, local market, and customer base.

A portfolio, not a popularity contest

Managers do not judge a game only by whether it looks busy. A complete review asks several different questions:

  • Is demand being turned away because capacity is too low?
  • Are open units sitting idle for long periods?
  • What is the game’s win or theoretical contribution over a meaningful period?
  • How much labor and supervision does it require?
  • Does it attract valuable customers who also use rooms, restaurants, or other games?
  • Is the result unusually volatile because of a few large players?
  • Does the product support the casino’s identity or satisfy a regulatory or contractual requirement?
  • Could the same space or staff produce more value elsewhere?

A crowded game can still be weak if its limits are too low for its staffing cost. An uncrowded high-limit table can still matter if it serves a small but valuable segment. A low-performing game may be retained because it completes the floor’s offer, creates energy, or supports a tournament or marketing program.

Four dimensions of game mix

Product mix is the share assigned to different games or machine families.

Price mix is the range of table minimums, denominations, paytables, and optional wagers.

Format mix separates live tables, stadium gaming, electronic tables, traditional slots, video poker, and other delivery formats.

Time mix recognizes that the correct open capacity at 2 p.m. may be wasteful or inadequate at 11 p.m.

This is why a floor plan alone cannot describe the real mix. Twenty blackjack tables on the layout may represent only six open games on a weekday morning and eighteen on a holiday night.

Measuring imbalance

A simple starting point compares the share of capacity with the share of business activity.

Capacity share = Category units ÷ Total units

Win share = Category win ÷ Total gaming win

Suppose a 40-table casino allocates its floor as follows over a review period:

A useful diagnostic is the share gap:

Share gap = Win share − Capacity share

For baccarat:

35% − 20% = +15 percentage points

For carnival games:

10% − 20% = −10 percentage points

These gaps identify questions, not automatic actions. Baccarat’s result may reflect a few volatile high-limit sessions. Carnival tables may be open only during peak periods, so counting all installed units can understate their productivity. Before moving games, management needs time-open, occupancy, average bet, theoretical win, labor, customer displacement, and a longer trend.

Demand needs its own denominator

Seat or unit utilization helps distinguish a weak product from insufficient scheduling.

Seat utilization = Occupied seat-hours ÷ Available seat-hours

If six roulette tables provide 36 seats for five hours, they create:

36 × 5 = 180 available seat-hours

If players occupy 144 seat-hours:

144 ÷ 180 = 80% utilization

An 80% average may hide periods above practical capacity, because players do not arrive evenly. A game can average 60% for the night but still lose customers during a one-hour peak. Managers therefore examine demand by shorter intervals, not only by daily totals.

Table utilization must also be interpreted differently from slot occupancy. A table may need an empty seat for comfort or game pace, while a slot bank at 100% occupancy may indicate unmet demand immediately.

Why recent actual win can mislead

Actual gaming win is noisy. A baccarat category can appear brilliant after one losing player and terrible after the same player wins heavily. Changing the floor after every swing would turn normal variance into bad strategy.

Mix decisions are stronger when they combine:

  • rolling actual performance;
  • theoretical win based on recorded action;
  • utilization and denied-demand evidence;
  • win per open hour or per unit;
  • direct labor and maintenance burden;
  • player-segment and cross-property value;
  • volatility and bankroll requirements;
  • expected effect on neighboring products.

Research presented through UNLV’s gaming repository has modeled casino-floor allocation as a constrained optimization problem rather than a simple ranking exercise. The game-mix and location optimization study is useful because it treats finite space and product placement as linked decisions.

Broader market data can provide context but cannot choose a local floor. The American Gaming Association’s revenue tracker separates major commercial-gaming verticals, yet a national increase in slot or table revenue does not prove that a specific property should add the same product.

A change should be tested as a hypothesis

Imagine that roulette queues appear every Friday from 10 p.m. to midnight while two blackjack tables remain lightly occupied. The proposed change is not “roulette wins more, so remove blackjack.” A testable proposal is:

Convert one underused blackjack position to roulette during the two-hour peak, preserve adequate blackjack capacity, and compare denied demand, occupancy, labor, theoretical win, and guest complaints for four comparable weekends.

That approach protects against three common errors:

  1. Chasing one lucky period.
  2. Confusing installed units with open capacity.
  3. Moving a game without measuring displaced customers.

A temporary layout, flexible table equipment, or daypart schedule can test demand before a permanent capital decision.

Game Weighting is a decision model that assigns importance to selected factors. Game mix is the actual allocation being evaluated.

Floor Optimization covers placement, sizing, adjacency, traffic, and ongoing improvement. Game mix is one input to that broader process.

Yield Management adjusts price and availability as demand changes. In table games, that may mean opening capacity or changing minimums within approved rules.

Win Per Unit compares earnings by machine, table, or another unit, but it should not be the only measure used to decide the mix.

The player-facing effect

Players experience game mix as availability and choice. It determines whether a preferred game is present, whether limits fit the budget, how long a seat takes to open, and whether the casino offers live, electronic, low-limit, or high-limit alternatives.

A casino can technically offer a game while making it practically inaccessible through too few units or unsuitable limits. Conversely, an enormous range of rarely used games can make the floor harder to staff and maintain without improving the customer experience.

The operational definition

Game mix is the casino’s working portfolio of gaming capacity. It balances customer demand with economics, labor, space, volatility, control requirements, and strategic purpose. The decision is not “which game has the highest house edge?” It is “which combination of products, quantities, prices, formats, and opening hours best serves this property without relying on short-term luck?”
