Time Played

Time played is the length of a rated gambling session used to estimate action, theoretical loss, and comp value.

Time played is the duration of gambling activity used to measure session exposure, player value, theoretical loss, and comp eligibility. In casino rating language, it is not always the same as the time between entering and leaving the property. It is the period the system or staff records as active play.

Time turns a bet amount into volume. A $50 average wager for ten minutes is very different from a $50 average wager for four hours, even though the chip size is identical.

How Table-Game Time Is Recorded

At a traditional table, the player presents a loyalty card or account identifier. The dealer or floor opens a rating with information such as:

  • buy-in;

  • end time;
  • closing chips or cash-out information where used;

Slot systems usually measure activity through the inserted or tapped loyalty account, coin-in, game events, and inactivity timers.

A card inserted for 90 minutes does not necessarily create 90 minutes of active credit. The system may pause the session after a period without a wager. It may also calculate value from coin-in rather than elapsed minutes.

A common table-game estimate is:

Theoretical Loss = Average Bet × Decisions per Hour × Hours Played × House Edge

Example:

Total estimated action:

$50 × 60 × 3 = $9,000

Theoretical loss:

Using the same $50 average bet, 60 decisions per hour, and 1.5% edge:

Player A:

  • Plays 20 minutes at $100 average
  • Loses $2,000

Player B:

Casinos generally do not price comps only by who suffered the largest short-term loss. Actual loss is volatile. Time, average bet, speed, and house edge create a more stable estimate of expected value.

Short sessions are difficult to rate accurately.

A player may begin with a $200 wager, drop to $25, and leave after 12 minutes. If the initial bet is recorded as the average, the rating can be overstated. If the floor observes only the low period, it can be understated.

The shorter the session, the more influence a few observed bets have on the recorded average. Longer sessions provide more opportunities to see the player’s normal pattern, though large fluctuations still require active rating updates.

Players should not assume the opening wager permanently determines the rating. Floor staff may adjust the average as play changes.

Breaks, Meals, and Empty Seats

Whether a pause counts depends on policy and system design.

Possible treatments include:

  • rating remains open for a short restroom break;
  • rating is paused after a defined inactivity period;
  • player is closed out when leaving the table;
  • reserved seat remains but active time stops;
  • slot session closes after no wagers for several minutes;

A heads-up blackjack player may receive far more hands per hour than a player at a full table. The casino may use standard speed assumptions or game-specific estimates. The same two-hour session can therefore produce different theoretical values depending on occupancy and procedure.

Baccarat, roulette, craps, poker-style carnival games, and blackjack all have different decision patterns. Side bets can also increase action without increasing recorded time.

Average Daily Theoretical, or ADT, often groups play by gaming day.

Simplified example:

Playing 90 extra minutes to pursue a $20-$25 benefit does not create free value. The player accepts variance and an estimated $86.63 cost to generate roughly $21.66 of reinvestment.

Longer sessions increase the number of betting decisions. More decisions mean:

  • more total action;
  • more expected loss on negative-expectation games;
  • more opportunities for large swings;
