A hardway is a craps total made with matching dice: 2-2 for a hard 4, 3-3 for a hard 6, 4-4 for a hard 8, or 5-5 for a hard 10. The word can describe the dice result itself, but players also use it as shorthand for a hardway bet.
Those are related ideas, not identical ones. Rolling 4-4 is a hard 8. Betting that the hard 8 will appear before an easy 8 or a 7 is a hardway wager.

Hardway Result Versus Hardway Bet
This distinction prevents most confusion.
Hardway result: the dice show matching numbers that total 4, 6, 8, or 10.
Hardway bet: a wager that the selected hardway result will be rolled before either a 7 or the same total appears the easy way.
For example, a hard 8 bet wins on 4-4. It loses on 2-6, 6-2, 3-5, 5-3, or any 7. Other totals usually do not decide the bet, so the wager stays in action unless the house rules or player instructions say otherwise.

The calculation is simple. If a $1 hard 8 bet wins once for every ten losses on average and the casino pays only $9 instead of the fair $10, the expected result over that eleven-decision cycle is a $1 loss on $11 wagered: 1 ÷ 11 = 9.09%.
Payouts vary. A worse paytable creates a larger house edge, so always read the layout or posted rules.
A Short Table Story
A new player puts $10 on hard 8. The shooter rolls 5-3.
The player celebrates because the total is 8. The dealer takes the hardway bet.
Nothing went wrong. The point total and the hardway condition are different. The table produced an easy 8, which is a losing result for a hard 8 wager.
Two rolls later the shooter rolls 4-4. The stickperson calls “hard eight,” but the player’s wager is already gone. A hardway bet must still be active when the winning pair appears.
Why Players Like Hardways
Hardways are visually clean and emotionally strong. Doubles look special. The dealer call is memorable. A winning hardway can produce a larger payout than many basic line or place bets.
That entertainment value does not make the wager mathematically strong. The casino pays less than the true odds, and the gap is large compared with lower-edge craps bets.
Players also like that the bet can survive several unrelated rolls. A hard 6 may stay up while the shooter rolls 5, 9, 3, or 11. That waiting time can make the wager feel safer than it is. The deciding outcomes still favor the house.
From the Casino Side
Hardways sit in the center action controlled by the stickperson and proposition-bet procedures. Accurate booking matters because dealers must know:
- which number is being bet;
- whether the bet is working or off;
- the chip value and correct payout;
- whether an easy version or 7 has already killed the bet;
- whether the bet remains up after a win under the table’s procedure;
- whether late bets were accepted before the dice were released.
The center layout can become crowded. Clear verbal confirmation protects both the player and the game. A player saying only “hardways” may mean all four numbers, a specific amount on each, or a change to existing bets. The dealer should not guess.
Common Misunderstandings
“Hardway means any double.”
No. In standard craps language, hardways are doubles totaling 4, 6, 8, or 10. A 1-1 is usually called aces or snake eyes; 6-6 is twelve or boxcars.
“If the total hits, the bet wins.”
Only the matching pair wins. The easy ways lose the hardway wager.
“Hardways are one-roll bets.”
Standard hardway bets are usually multi-roll wagers. A separate “hardway on the hop” is a one-roll bet and has different odds and procedures.
“The payout shows the true probability.”
No. A 9-to-1 payout on hard 6 or hard 8 is below the 10-to-1 true odds. That difference is the house advantage.
“Hard 6 and hard 8 are worse because there are more easy ways.”
They have more losing easy combinations, but the usual payout is also higher. At common payouts, hard 6 and 8 have a lower house edge than hard 4 and 10, though all four remain high-edge proposition bets.
