The standard baccarat Banker bet has a house edge of approximately 1.06% in the common eight-deck game when Banker wins pay 0.95 to 1 after 5% commission and Tie results push. Banker is usually the lowest-edge main wager because the drawing rules make the Banker hand win slightly more often than the Player hand. The reduced payout converts that structural advantage into a small casino advantage.
Start with the three settlement outcomes
A Banker wager does not simply win or lose. It has three possible results:

The probabilities can vary slightly with deck count and exact rules, so the calculation must state its assumptions. The familiar 1.06% figure refers to the standard eight-deck Punto Banco model with 5% commission.
Deriving the 1.06% house edge
Expected value weights each net result by its probability:
$$EV = P(Banker)\times0.95 + P(Player)\times(-1) + P(Tie)\times0$$
Substituting the eight-deck figures:
$$EV = 0.458597\times0.95 - 0.446247$$
$$EV = -0.01057985$$
The player loses approximately 0.01058 units per unit wagered in expectation. Therefore:
$$House\ Edge = 1.057985% \approx 1.06%$$
On a $100 Banker wager, the expected loss is about $1.06. This is an average across very large numbers of coups, not a forecast that each $100 hand will lose $1.06.
Ties do not disappear from the probability model
A Tie is a real hand outcome, but it normally has zero financial result for a standard Banker wager. It must remain in the probability table because the three outcome probabilities must sum to 100%. It contributes zero to EV rather than being treated as a win or loss.
This creates two different percentages that are often confused:
- Banker wins about 45.86% of all coups;
- Banker wins about 50.68% of decisive coups after ties are excluded.
The first figure is used in the full expected-value calculation. The second is useful for comparing Banker and Player outcomes, but it should not be presented as the probability that a standard Banker wager produces a win on any random coup.
Why Banker wins more often
The labels “Player” and “Banker” do not describe who is physically holding the cards. They name two automatic hands. Neither side chooses whether to draw.
The Player hand follows a simple third-card rule. The Banker hand’s draw decision can depend on both its own total and, in many cases, the value of the Player’s third card. Because the Banker rule is applied after more information is available, it produces a small statistical advantage.
Among decisive outcomes only—after ties are removed—the Banker hand wins approximately:
$$\frac{0.458597}{0.458597+0.446247}=50.6824%$$
That does not mean a Banker wager wins 50.68% of all coups. Ties still occur and push the wager. It means Banker wins a little more than half of the non-tie decisions.
Why the fair payout would be higher than 0.95 to 1
If Tie pushes and the casino wanted the Banker wager to have zero expected value, the fair net payout $r$ would satisfy:
$$0.458597r - 0.446247 = 0$$
Therefore:
$$r = \frac{0.446247}{0.458597}=0.97307$$
A mathematically fair payout under these assumptions would be about 0.973 to 1, equivalent to a commission of roughly 2.69% on Banker wins. The standard 5% commission pays only 0.95 to 1, leaving the casino with the 1.06% edge.
This is a useful way to understand the commission. It does not exist merely because “casinos charge fees.” It corrects the Banker’s natural win-frequency advantage and then prices the wager slightly in the casino’s favor.
Commission collection does not change the mathematics
Casinos use different operating methods:
- commission can be collected immediately after each Banker win;
- commission can be tracked with lammers or a commission box and collected later;
- the game may use a no-commission rule that modifies one Banker outcome;
- a reduced-commission variation may use a different percentage.
If the effective payout is still 0.95 to 1 on every Banker win, collecting immediately or later does not change EV. It changes the procedure and the risk of accounting errors.
Commission rounding can change individual payouts
Five percent of a winning wager is not always a whole chip. On a $25 Banker win, exact commission is $1.25 and exact net profit is $23.75. A casino’s chip denominations and approved procedure determine whether commission is collected exactly, accumulated, rounded, or handled through a commission marker system.
Rounding rules can slightly alter the effective return for particular bet sizes. Players should not assume that every table settles awkward amounts identically. The posted rules and the dealer’s announced procedure matter, especially at low stakes where a small rounding difference is large relative to the wager.

A session-cost example
Suppose a player makes 80 Banker wagers of $100 each:
$$Total\ Action = 80\times100 = 8{,}000$$
Using the more precise 1.057985% edge:
$$Expected\ Loss = 8{,}000\times0.01057985 = 84.64$$
The expected loss is approximately $84.64.
Actual results can be far above or below this value. A series of Banker wins can produce a profitable shoe, while a Player-heavy sequence can produce a large loss. The expected loss measures average pricing; it does not suppress variance.
Increasing the number of wagers increases expected cost. It does not make the next Banker outcome more predictable. Roadmaps, streak charts, and prior results do not alter the drawing rules or the composition model used in the house-edge calculation.
Banker versus Player is a cost comparison
The Player bet normally pays 1 to 1 and has a slightly higher house edge, commonly quoted around 1.24% in the eight-deck game. The gap between approximately 1.06% and 1.24% is real but small in dollars unless the action is large.
For $10,000 of total action:

The approximate difference is $18 per $10,000 wagered. Banker is the lower-cost choice, but “lower cost” is not the same as positive expectation.

Repeated Banker betting does not create a trend advantage
Always choosing the lower-edge main wager is a rational cost comparison, but it does not predict the next hand. A shoe can contain long Banker or Player runs, alternating outcomes, and clusters of ties. The conditional probability of the next coup depends on the remaining card composition, not on the visual shape of a roadmap.
The standard house-edge figure is an average over all possible shoes and drawing sequences. It does not mean every shoe produces a 1.06% loss, and it does not become positive because a player waits for a pattern. More hands simply create more total action to which the edge applies.
No-commission baccarat must be calculated from its own rule
“No commission” does not mean the Banker bet has no casino advantage. A no-commission version usually changes the payout on a specified Banker result—for example, paying half on a particular winning total or pushing a particular Banker win.
That altered result must be added as its own branch in the expected-value calculation. Applying the standard 1.06% figure to a modified payout schedule can be wrong. The exact house edge depends on the approved rules, deck count, and settlement table.
The same warning applies to promotional variants, reduced commission, side bets, and electronic baccarat. Read the posted rules rather than assuming every table carrying the Baccarat name uses the same math.

Operational accuracy still matters
The theoretical edge assumes every winning and losing wager is settled correctly. At a live table, missed commission, wrong payout, incorrect Tie handling, and uncollected deferred commission can change actual casino win.
Dealers and supervisors therefore monitor:
- the winning hand and point count;
- whether the wager wins, loses, or pushes;
- the correct commission or modified payout;
- deferred commission records;
- chip denomination and rounding procedure;
- the sequence for clearing and paying the layout.
The math is small enough that repeated procedure errors can materially affect the game’s actual performance.
