Roadmaps are accurate records of past baccarat outcomes. The myth begins when a visual pattern is treated as evidence that the next coup is due to continue or reverse.

Baccarat patterns are real as descriptions and unreliable as forecasts. A shoe can contain six Banker wins in a row, a long alternating sequence, or several Ties. The scoreboard records those events accurately. It does not follow that the next coup is more likely to continue the drawing, break it, or complete a shape.

The pattern myth is the belief that visual order in past results creates predictive information that is not contained in the actual remaining cards.

Roadmaps compress history, not the shoe

The Big Road and derived roads are display systems. They transform completed Banker, Player, and Tie outcomes into columns, marks, colors, and rules for placement. This can make a random sequence look organized because the display is designed to reveal runs and changes.

What the roadmap does know:

  • which side won previous coups;
  • where streaks and alternations occurred;
  • how the selected display rule classifies those results;
  • whether the current visual structure resembles an earlier part of the shoe.

What it does not know:

  • the exact ranks remaining in the shoe;
  • the order of undealt cards;
  • which third-card rules will be triggered next;
  • whether a visible streak is about to continue or end;
  • whether a pattern rule has a positive expected value after commission and Ties.

Baccarat outcomes are not perfectly independent—but the roadmap still is not a card counter

Cards are dealt without replacement, so the exact probability of the next result can shift slightly as ranks leave the shoe. Saying every coup has literally identical probabilities would be imprecise.

That nuance does not validate pattern betting. A sequence of B-P-B-P or B-B-B-B is not a sufficient description of the remaining card composition. Two shoes can display the same road while containing different undealt cards. The visible shape discards most of the information that would be required for a composition-based calculation.

A more accurate statement is:

P(next result | exact remaining shoe) may change slightly

but

P(next result | roadmap shape alone) has no demonstrated predictive advantage

For a fresh standard eight-deck game, the familiar approximate outcome probabilities are about 45.86% Banker, 44.62% Player, and 9.52% Tie. The Banker advantage over Player comes from the drawing rules, not from whether the previous column is long or short.

Continuation and reversal stories cannot both be evidence

Pattern systems often switch explanations after the result:

  • A streak continues: “The shoe is running.”
  • A streak ends: “The pattern was due to break.”
  • An alternating sequence continues: “The chop is strong.”
  • The chop ends: “The board changed character.”

Because either result can be explained afterward, the story is difficult to falsify. A useful prediction rule must be specified before the coup, applied consistently, and tested against results not used to invent it.

A rule such as “bet Banker after three Bankers” is testable. “Follow the feeling of the board” is not, because the definition changes with the outcome.

The financial cost comes from changed action

A pattern does not create a fee by existing. It creates cost when confidence changes how much or where a player bets.

Expected pattern cost = additional action caused by the pattern × house edge of those wagers

Suppose a player would otherwise stop, but a long Banker column causes 30 additional $50 Banker wagers.

Additional action:

30 × $50 = $1,500

Using an approximately 1.06% Banker house edge:

$1,500 × 0.0106 = $15.90 expected additional loss

The session can still win. The $15.90 is the long-run average cost attached to the extra action, not a prediction for that shoe.

The damage can be larger when pattern confidence redirects money to the Tie bet. At an 8:1 Tie payoff, the house edge is roughly 14.36% in a standard eight-deck game. Ten extra $10 Tie wagers create $100 of action and about $14.36 of expected loss—almost as much expected cost as the much larger Banker action above.

Why the board feels persuasive

Several normal cognitive processes strengthen the myth:

  • Small samples look meaningful. A short shoe segment can appear unusually streaky or unusually balanced.
  • Visual grouping creates a story. Columns and colored marks make outcomes easier to remember than a plain list.
  • Selective memory protects the system. Players remember the clean continuation and discount the ambiguous or failed signal.
  • Commitment changes interpretation. After placing a large pattern bet, the player has an incentive to see the method as informed rather than emotional.
  • Social confirmation spreads quickly. Several players reacting to the same board can make agreement feel like evidence.

Experimental research on the gambler’s fallacy and beliefs about random sequences shows how people infer reversals from runs even when the generating process does not support that conclusion. Trend-following is the mirror error: treating a run as evidence that it must continue.

The official rules do not contain a pattern state

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s official baccarat rules define the cards, point count, drawing procedure, outcomes, and settlement. There is no rule that modifies the next coup because the road shows a streak, chop, dragon, or break.

That matters because casino games are resolved through published states and procedures. “The pattern looked strong” is not a game state. Banker, Player, Tie, card totals, and drawing rules are.

How to test a claimed pattern honestly

A serious test needs more than a list of winning examples.

  1. Write the entry and exit rule before collecting results.
  2. Define how Ties, commission, pushes, and skipped coups are handled.
  3. Use a large sample separate from the sample used to design the rule.
  4. Compare the rule with flat betting on the same underlying wager.
  5. Include all action, not only completed streaks that looked clear.
  6. Report expected value, variance, drawdown, and uncertainty.
  7. Do not change the rule after seeing a loss.

Most informal pattern claims fail at steps one and two. The signal is described loosely enough that losing cases are reclassified after the fact.

A baccarat variance simulator can show how often attractive streaks appear by chance, but simulation should not be used to search endlessly until one historical pattern looks successful. That is data mining, not evidence.

What roadmaps are useful for

Roadmaps can still serve legitimate purposes:

  • keeping an accurate visible history of the shoe;
  • helping players follow completed outcomes;
  • supporting table communication and dispute review;
  • showing how random sequences can produce clusters and alternation;
  • slowing a player down long enough to review bet size and total action.

They are records, not forecasts. A player can enjoy following the display without converting it into a claim about future cards.

The clean rule

A roadmap can tell you exactly what happened. It cannot tell you that the next hand owes the board a continuation or a correction.

Play smart. Gambling involves real financial risk. If the game stops being entertainment, it's time to stop playing.
