Baccarat payout procedure begins only after both hands are complete and the final totals have been announced. The crew then turns one result into several separate settlements: losing bets are collected, pushes are returned, winning main bets are paid, commission or variant rules are applied, side bets are resolved, and the layout is cleared for the next coup.
The sequence is not ceremonial. It prevents a dealer from paying against the wrong result, mixing losing chips with winning positions, forgetting commission, or starting another hand while a disputed wager is still moving.
This page covers how a table settles wagers. For a player-facing chart of what each bet pays, use Baccarat Payouts. For the separate control of 5% Banker commission, see Baccarat Commission Procedure.
First lock the result
No wager should be settled while the hand is still uncertain. Before chips move, the dealer calling the game should be able to state:
- the final Player total;
- the final Banker total;
- which hand won or whether the result was Tie;
- any result that changes settlement under the table’s variant;
- any side-bet trigger that depends on card count, rank, suit, pair, margin or exact total.
For a normal coup, a useful verbal sequence is concise: “Player 7, Banker 5. Player wins.” On a Tie, the call must make clear that the main Banker and Player wagers do not lose under the standard rule. On an EZ Baccarat table, a three-card Banker 7 may need a distinct call because the Banker wager pushes instead of winning normally.
The dealer should not rely on a generic “Banker wins” call when the exact Banker total controls a special payout. The table variant is part of the result.
Settlement has a direction
A disciplined table uses a consistent physical order. The exact seat direction can be set by approved house procedure, but it should not change from hand to hand.
A common control sequence is:
- announce and visually confirm the result;
- identify any special or side-bet outcomes;
- collect losing wagers;
- leave pushed wagers in place or clearly return them;
- pay winning positions in the approved seat order;
- mark or collect Banker commission where applicable;
- verify large or unusual payouts;
- remove the cards and reset the layout.
Collecting losers before paying winners gives the layout a cleaner state. If winners are paid while losing wagers remain everywhere, it becomes harder to see which chips are original stakes, which are payouts and which should have been collected.
The order also creates an audit trail. A supervisor or surveillance reviewer can follow the same path across the layout instead of trying to reconstruct random chip movement.
Main bets do not all settle the same way
| Final result | Banker wager | Player wager | Tie wager |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker wins, standard commission game | Wins; commission applies | Loses | Loses |
| Player wins | Loses | Wins at 1:1 | Loses |
| Tie | Pushes | Pushes | Wins at posted odds |
| Banker three-card 7 in EZ Baccarat | Pushes under the cited rule set | Loses | Loses unless another posted rule applies |
“Push” means the original wager is returned without profit. It is not a loss and should not be swept with losing chips. That distinction is especially important on a crowded layout where many Banker and Player bets sit beside a small number of winning Tie wagers.
Tie payouts can vary. A table paying 8:1 produces $200 profit on a $25 winning Tie wager; 9:1 produces $225. The felt, approved paytable and signage control. A dealer should not pay from memory when a property operates more than one baccarat package.
Commission baccarat requires two calculations
In standard 5% commission baccarat, a winning Banker wager is paid at even money before deducting or recording the commission.
For wager B and commission rate c:
Banker profit = B × (1 − c)
At 5%:
Banker profit = B × 0.95
A $400 winning Banker wager therefore produces:
$400 × 0.95 = $380 profit
The player also receives the original $400 stake, so the total returned is $780.
Commission can be handled in more than one approved way. Some tables collect it immediately from each winning payout. Others mark the amount owed by player position and collect it later under a controlled procedure. The method must match the table’s rules and records. Mixing immediate collection with deferred marking during the same game creates avoidable shortages and disputes.
Odd amounts need particular care. A $75 Banker win at 5% creates $3.75 commission and $71.25 profit in exact arithmetic. Casinos may use approved chip denominations, commission tables or rounding procedures. The dealer must use the property’s method rather than inventing a convenient rounded payout.
Side bets form a second settlement layer
A side bet can win while the main wager loses, or lose while the main wager pushes. It must therefore be tested against its own trigger.
Suppose Player wins 8 to 6 with a three-card 8. Depending on the installed side-bet package, the hand might trigger a Player-side bonus, a three-card result, a margin payout or nothing at all. The correct question is not “Did Player win?” but “Did the exact posted condition occur?”
Side-bet procedure should answer four points:
- Which cards are relevant: first two only or the final hand?
- Does a natural have a separate payout?
- Is the payout based on winning margin, pair type, card count or exact total?
- Does the bet push on any result?
A high payout should be verified before the cards are discarded. Once the cards are mixed into the discard bucket, reconstructing rank, suit and order becomes slower and sometimes impossible from the table alone.
The official sequence confirms the control logic
The active Massachusetts Baccarat rules require the dealer to announce the final point counts and winning hand, collect losing wagers first, then pay winning positions in descending seat order while marking or collecting vigorish. They also distinguish standard commission play from EZ Baccarat, where vigorish is not collected and a Dragon 7 changes the Banker result.
That is one jurisdiction’s approved rule package, not a universal script for every casino. Mini-baccarat, midi-baccarat, no-commission Banker-6 games and proprietary side bets can require different calls and payment steps. The common principle is consistent settlement against the rules displayed at that table.
A complete hand example
Consider these wagers at one position:
- $500 on Banker;
- $50 on Banker Pair;
- $25 on Tie.
The final hands are Player 4 and Banker 7, with no Banker pair. On a standard commission table:
- The dealer calls “Player 4, Banker 7. Banker wins.”
- The $25 Tie wager is collected.
- The $50 Banker Pair wager is collected because the first two Banker cards were not a pair.
- The $500 Banker wager is paid.
- At 5% commission, the net profit is $475.
- The commission is collected immediately or marked according to procedure.
- The cards are cleared only after the position is complete.
Now change only the variant: the Banker 7 was made with three cards at an EZ Baccarat table. The $500 Banker wager pushes rather than earning $475. The same visible final total produces a different settlement because the rule package changed.
What to do when the payout may be wrong
The safest response is to stop the next hand before the evidence disappears.
The dealer should leave the disputed chips and cards as undisturbed as practical, call the supervisor, state the original wager and result, and avoid negotiating directly from memory. The supervisor can compare the layout, rack, commission record, card sequence, game display and surveillance footage.
A correction should be documented when required. Quietly taking chips from another payout to “make the rack right” hides the original error and can create a second one.
Players help themselves by raising an objection immediately and identifying the exact position and amount: “My $100 Player wager was collected on a Tie” is reviewable. “You paid the last hand wrong” is much less precise.
The full dispute process is covered in Baccarat Disputes and Mispaid Bets, while Baccarat Dealer Errors explains how procedural shortcuts turn into repeat failures.
A clean layout is the final control
Before “place your bets” is called again, the crew should be able to see that:
- all losing wagers were collected;
- every winning wager was paid once;
- pushed wagers remain with the correct player;
- commission is settled or recorded;
- side bets are cleared;
- no disputed chips remain unresolved;
- cards are in the discard area;
- the result display and roadmap, if used, match the completed coup.
Baccarat moves quickly because its drawing decisions are fixed. That speed is safe only when settlement remains deliberate. The next hand should never begin merely because the cards are ready; it begins when the previous money is fully accounted for.
