A blackjack table can deal the dealer only one card at the start and still be either reasonably player-friendly or distinctly expensive. The difference is not the missing hole card by itself. It is the settlement rule when the dealer’s second card later completes blackjack.
The practical question is simple:
If you double or split before the dealer’s blackjack is known, which wagers are taken?
That answer determines whether ordinary peek-game strategy remains suitable or whether some doubles and splits become less valuable.
Three procedures that are often confused
Hole-card with a peek
In a common U.S.-style game, the dealer receives a face-down card and checks for blackjack when showing an ace or ten-value card. If blackjack is present, the round ends before players add money through doubles or splits.
No hole card, original bets only
The dealer receives the second card after players finish acting. If the dealer makes blackjack, only the original wager for each starting hand is lost; protected extra split and double wagers are returned. This is commonly called original bets only, or OBO.
No hole card, all wagers lose
Players may double or split before the dealer receives the second card. If that card completes blackjack, the original wager and all additional wagers lose. This is the version that creates the largest extra cost and the most strategy changes.

A casino’s own rules may describe the dealing sequence without using the phrase “European no hole card.” For example, this published blackjack guide deals one card to the dealer initially and the dealer’s remaining cards only after players finish.
Why the dealer upcard changes the risk
The extra danger exists only when the dealer can still make a two-card blackjack. That means an ace or a ten-value upcard.
Using an eight-deck shoe and ignoring the player cards for a simple illustration:
Dealer shows Ace: P(dealer blackjack) ≈ 128 ten-value cards / 415 unseen cards ≈ 30.84%
Dealer shows 10-value card: P(dealer blackjack) ≈ 32 aces / 415 unseen cards ≈ 7.71%
The exact probability changes after accounting for the player’s cards, but the comparison remains clear: extra wagers placed against a dealer ace are exposed to dealer blackjack much more often than extra wagers placed against a dealer ten.
Suppose a player has a $25 wager and doubles for another $25 under an all-wagers-lose rule.

This is not the total expected value of the hand. It isolates the additional risk created by exposing the second wager before dealer blackjack is resolved.
The rule changes decisions, not card values
An 11 is still a strong doubling total. A pair of eights is still an awkward hand. What changes is the price of committing more money before knowing whether the dealer already has blackjack.
Under harsh all-bets-lost settlement, correct strategy generally becomes more conservative against dealer ace and ten. Some doubles become hits, and some splits become less attractive. A chart designed for a peek game can therefore be wrong even when deck count, soft-17 rule, and blackjack payout look identical.
Under OBO protection, strategy is usually much closer to the equivalent hole-card game because the additional wagers are not confiscated by a later dealer blackjack. Other differences—insurance timing, surrender availability, or table-specific rules—can still matter.

A split example shows the hidden cost
A player wagers $25 and receives 8-8 against a dealer ace. The player splits, creating two $25 hands. One of those hands receives another 8 and is re-split, producing three hands and $75 of total base action.
If the dealer later makes blackjack:

The player did not make a $50 “strategy mistake” merely by splitting. The extra cost came from applying a normal split decision under a different settlement rule.
What to check before buying in
Do not rely on the table name. Read the rule card, screen, or posted notice and ask a supervisor when wording is unclear.
- Does the dealer take a second card before or after player action?
- If dealer blackjack appears later, do doubles lose?
- Do additional split wagers lose?
- Are busted split hands treated differently?
- Is surrender available, and when?
- Does insurance resolve before player action?
- Which basic-strategy chart matches this exact settlement rule?
The most revealing phrase is often not “no hole card.” It is “dealer blackjack wins all bets” or “original bets only.”
Two misleading shortcuts
“European blackjack always has a higher edge.” Not necessarily. Geography is not the rule. OBO protection can remove most of the extra double-and-split exposure.
“The dealer getting the second card later changes the deck against me.” The order of dealing does not create the main cost. The settlement of additional wagers does.
The player-side decision
No-hole-card blackjack should be evaluated as a package. A 3:2 payout and good doubling rules may look attractive, but exposed doubles and splits can erase part of that value. Conversely, a one-card dealer procedure with OBO protection may be much closer to the familiar peek game than the label suggests.
