A blackjack sign that says “splitting allowed” does not tell you enough. The real rule quality is in the next line: how many hands can be created, whether aces may be resplit, whether split aces receive only one card, and whether doubling is allowed after the split.
Those details change expected value because a correct split is not a ceremonial move. It replaces one hand with two or more hands when the combined value of the new decisions is better than playing the original pair as a single total.
Four restrictions that are often bundled together

These are separate rules. A table can allow resplitting ordinary pairs but forbid resplitting aces. It can allow three or four hands while still limiting split aces to one card each. It can permit splitting but remove double-after-split value.

Why the value is concentrated in a few pairs
A restriction matters only when it blocks an action that would otherwise improve expected value.
A pair of tens is normally stood on, so permission to split tens adds little practical value to correct play. A pair of fives is usually treated as hard 10 and doubled when the rules and dealer upcard call for it. By contrast:
- A,A is valuable because each ace can start a strong hand.
- 8,8 is often split because hard 16 is a poor starting total.
- 2,2, 3,3, 6,6, and 7,7 gain some of their value from the possibility of doubling after the split against weak dealer cards.

Approximate rule costs under a stated baseline
Rule effects are not universal constants. They depend on deck count, dealer rules, permitted doubles, hole-card procedure, and strategy adjustments. Still, a standard comparison is useful for screening tables.
Under the baseline used in the cited mathematical rule-variation analysis—eight decks, dealer stands on soft 17, doubling on any first two cards, double after split allowed, and splitting to four hands—the following changes reduce player return by approximately:

The signs matter. A change of −0.14 percentage points in player return means the house edge increases by roughly 0.14 percentage points, not by 14% of the original edge.

A worked table comparison
Suppose two six-deck games both pay 3:2, stand on soft 17, and have an estimated base house edge of 0.50% under correct strategy.
- Table A: resplitting allowed and double after split allowed.
- Table B: no resplitting and no double after split.
A quick screening estimate adds about 0.10 and 0.14 percentage points to Table B:

The extra expected cost is about $24 per $10,000 of action under this simplified comparison. It does not predict either session. It measures the long-run price of the missing options.
Split aces require their own reading
“Split aces allowed” can still hide several limitations:
- Each ace may receive exactly one card.
- An ace plus a ten-value card may count as 21 rather than a natural blackjack.
- Resplitting may be prohibited if another ace appears.
- Hitting or doubling may be prohibited.
These restrictions exist because starting two hands with aces is valuable. The resplitting-aces guide isolates that rule. A table that permits resplitting aces but still gives one card to each hand is better than a table that prohibits the resplit, but it is not the same as unrestricted play.
Read the whole rule chain, not one favorable line
A common mistake is choosing a table because it allows four hands while ignoring a 6:5 blackjack payout. The payout penalty is normally much larger than the small gain from generous resplitting. Another mistake is using a double-after-split chart at a table where DAS is prohibited.
The useful order for comparing games is:
- Confirm the blackjack payout.
- Check whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17.
- Check doubling and surrender rules.
- Then inspect ordinary resplits, ace resplits, and post-split options.

Restricted splitting rarely creates the largest blackjack penalty on the sign. Its importance is that several small restrictions can accumulate, alter strategy, and quietly raise the cost of every future pair decision.
