The World bet in craps, also called the Whirl, is not one wager covering five totals. It is a five-part package: one unit each on 2, 3, 7, 11, and 12. Every part is settled on the next valid roll. Under the common 30-to-1, 15-to-1, and 4-to-1 pay schedule, a 7 returns the original five-unit stake with no profit, while 2, 3, 11, or 12 produces a net win.
That structure explains both the appeal and the cost. The player sees one-third of the 36 dice combinations covered, but half of those covered combinations are sevens that usually only push the combined wager.
A five-unit call with five separate pieces
A clean World bet is made in multiples of five because the dealer divides it evenly:

A $5 World therefore means five $1 wagers. A $25 World means five $5 wagers. The call does not create a new probability distribution; it simply groups a Horn bet and an Any Seven bet into one instruction.
Amounts that are not divisible by five require clarification or a house-specific adjustment. Calling “$12 World,” for example, does not tell the dealer how to allocate the extra two dollars. A player who wants a nonstandard weighting should call the individual wagers instead of assuming the crew will interpret it.
What each possible roll does
With a $5 World and common payouts, the net result is calculated after the four losing components are removed:

The words “pays 30 to 1” refer to profit. The winning $1 stake is also returned. The table above shows the result for the complete World package, not the gross amount pushed toward the player before the losing pieces are collected.
Why seven is normally a push
Seven is the most common two-dice total, appearing in 6 of 36 equally likely combinations. That makes the World feel protected against the result that ends many craps bets.
On a standard $5 World:
- the $1 Any Seven component wins $4;
- the $1 wagers on 2, 3, 11, and 12 lose $4 in total;
- net profit is therefore $0.
Some crews say “World is a push on seven.” That is convenient shorthand, but the table is still settling five separate wagers. If the posted Any Seven payout or the allocation differs, the net result can differ too.
The distinction also matters psychologically. A push occurs on 6 of the 12 covered combinations. The wager produces an actual profit on only 6 combinations: one way to roll 2, two ways to roll 3, two ways to roll 11, and one way to roll 12. So the probability of a profitable roll is 6/36, or 16.67%, not 33.33%.
Profit, push, and loss are not the same as “coverage”
The World’s 12 covered combinations divide into three different experiences:

This is a useful correction to the phrase “it covers one-third of the dice.” Coverage only means one component wins. It does not say whether the full package earns money. A player who records only “hit” and “miss” may count the seven as a success even though the bankroll did not increase.
The bet’s volatility also comes from concentrating the profitable outcomes in rare totals. Two-thirds of rolls lose all five units, one-sixth return the stake, and one-sixth produce a positive result of very different sizes. That distribution is why a short run can include several complete losses followed by one dramatic payout without changing the long-run edge.
Deriving the common 13.33% house edge
Let:
- Pᵢ be the probability of outcome group i;
- Rᵢ be the net result for the full five-unit wager;
- B be the initial five-unit stake.
The expected value is:
EV = Σ(Pᵢ × Rᵢ)
For a $5 World under the common schedule:
EV = (2/36 × $26) + (4/36 × $11) + (6/36 × $0) + (24/36 × −$5)
EV = $1.4444 + $1.2222 − $3.3333 = −$0.6667
House edge is expected loss divided by the amount initially wagered:
House edge = $0.6667 ÷ $5 = 13.33%
The result means the long-run average loss is about 66.7 cents for every $5 World wagered. It does not mean every fifth bet loses 66.7 cents. Individual rolls return either a sizeable net win, a push, or the entire five-unit loss.
Payout variants must be checked before betting
Not every layout uses the same proposition payouts. If 2 and 12 pay 29 to 1 while 3 and 11 pay 14 to 1, the full-package net wins become $25 and $10 rather than $26 and $11. The expected loss then rises:
EV = (2/36 × $25) + (4/36 × $10) + (6/36 × $0) + (24/36 × −$5)
EV = −$0.8333 on $5, an edge of 16.67%
The printed layout and posted house rules control. Do not transfer a payout from another casino, an online table, or a memory of a previous trip.
Massachusetts’ official craps and mini-craps rules define the Whirl as four Horn units plus one Any Seven unit and list the common 30-to-1, 15-to-1, and 4-to-1 proposition payouts. Other jurisdictions may approve different schedules.
How the table crew handles the bet
World is normally a dealer-controlled center action wager. The player calls the amount clearly before the dice are out, sends the chips to the stickperson or dealer according to house procedure, and waits for the wager to be booked.
A good call contains both the amount and the bet: “Twenty-five dollar World.” The crew divides it into five $5 units. On the next roll, the stickperson announces the total, the losing parts are collected, and any winning part is paid according to the layout.
Several practical points prevent disputes:
- Do not assume a verbal call was accepted until the dealer confirms it.
- Do not throw chips into the center while the dice are moving.
- Check whether the wager stays up, comes down, or must be called again after settlement.
- Distinguish World from Horn, Horn High, C and E, and Any Seven; each allocates the money differently.
- Ask for the payout schedule before betting if the printed felt is unclear.
The Horn bet excludes 7. Any Seven covers only 7. A Horn High adds an extra unit to one Horn number rather than adding Any Seven.
Repeating the bet changes the real cost
A single World bet may be treated as a one-roll novelty. Repeating it every roll turns a high-edge proposition into substantial total action.
Suppose a player makes a $25 World for 40 rolls:
Total action = $25 × 40 = $1,000
At a 13.33% edge:
Expected loss = $1,000 × 0.1333 ≈ $133.33
Actual results can be much better or worse because the profitable totals are infrequent and payouts are uneven. The calculation is the long-run price of the action, not a forecast of the final rack after 40 rolls.

The useful way to read a World bet
The World bet is neither five-number diversification nor protection from the seven. It is a compact package of volatile one-roll propositions. The seven prevents a loss under the common schedule, but it does not pay a profit; the other 24 combinations lose the entire bundle.
A player who chooses it should know four things before the dice move: the unit allocation, the posted payouts, the net result on each covered total, and the amount that will be repeated over the session. Once those are visible, the wager is no longer mysterious—only expensive.
