A baccarat pair bet is a side wager on whether the first two cards of the Player hand, Banker hand, or either hand form a qualifying pair. The pair result is settled separately from the main Banker, Player, or Tie outcome.

The main baccarat wager asks which hand finishes closer to nine. A pair wager asks a simpler question before any third card matters: do the first two cards on the selected side have the same rank?
Two queens are a rank pair even if their suits differ. An 8 and an 8 are a pair. A king and a queen are not. A third card cannot create an ordinary Player Pair or Banker Pair because those bets normally use only the initial two cards.

Settlement Timing
Pair bets can usually be decided immediately after the first four cards are exposed—two to Player and two to Banker. The dealer can collect losing pair wagers and pay winning pair wagers before dealing any required third cards.
That sequence matters operationally because it keeps the side bet separate and reduces confusion. Massachusetts’ published baccarat rules, for example, describe a pair-based House Money wager that wins when either initial hand contains two cards of the same rank and is settled before third-card dealing. Individual pair products can use different names and payouts, but the first-two-card principle is the same.
Common Payout
A common Player Pair or Banker Pair paytable is 11 to 1, but casinos and approved game variants can use other odds. Never assume the payout from another table or website.
At 11 to 1:
- a $10 winning wager earns $110 profit;
- the original $10 stake is also returned;
- total returned is $120.
The large payout is possible because the event occurs infrequently.
Exact Pair Probability
With an eight-deck shoe, there are 416 cards. After the first card is dealt to a hand, 415 cards remain. There are 31 remaining cards of the same rank: seven matching copies in the same suit across the other decks plus eight copies in each of the other three suits.
Pair probability = 31 ÷ 415 = 7.4699%
That is roughly one pair in 13.39 initial two-card hands over the long run.
With a six-deck shoe:
Pair probability = 23 ÷ 311 = 7.3955%
The deck count changes the probability slightly because the number of duplicate ranks changes.
House Edge at an 11-to-1 Payout
For an eight-deck shoe:
Expected return = (0.0746988 × 11) − (0.9253012 × 1)
Expected return = −0.1036144
So the house edge is approximately 10.36% on an 11-to-1 one-side pair wager with eight decks.

Example: Main Bet Loses, Pair Bet Wins
A player wagers:
- $100 on Banker;
- $10 on Banker Pair.
Banker’s first two cards are 8♣ and 8♥. The pair wager wins immediately. Later, Player draws and wins the main hand.

Pair Does Not Mean a Strong Hand
In baccarat, cards are valued by their point total, not poker strength. A pair of 5s totals zero. A pair of 9s is a natural 8 because only the last digit counts. The fact that a hand contains a pair does not automatically make it likely to win.
This is a major source of confusion for players familiar with poker. “Pair” describes the side-bet pattern, not the strength ranking of the baccarat hand.
Either Pair and Both Pairs
An Either Pair wager watches both initial hands and therefore hits more often than a one-side pair wager. Its payout must be lower to reflect that higher frequency.
A Both Pairs wager requires Player and Banker each to have a pair. That is much rarer and can carry a larger payout. The two hands are dealt from the same shoe, so a precise probability calculation must account for card removal rather than simply multiplying two independent percentages.
For players, the practical rule is easier: compare the posted payout and approved rules, not only the dramatic name.
Perfect Pair Variants
“Perfect Pair” can mean a pair of the same rank and suit, or it can be part of a paytable that distinguishes perfect, colored, and mixed pairs. These products are not all identical.
A suited pair is rarer than an ordinary rank pair. The casino can therefore offer a higher top payout while retaining a substantial edge across the full paytable. Read every qualifying category before betting.

Pair bets are attractive to operators because they are easy to explain, fast to settle, and add action to a game whose main Banker wager has a relatively low house edge.

“A pair is due because none appeared recently”
Past shoes do not create a debt. Card removal can change composition slightly within a shoe, but a scoreboard streak does not guarantee the next pair.
“Player Pair should pay if Player draws a matching third card”
Ordinary pair bets use the first two cards only. A third card does not repair a losing pair wager.
“A pair helps the main hand”
Not necessarily. Baccarat totals and drawing rules still determine the main result.
“11 to 1 means the bet is good value”
The payout must be compared with the probability. At common eight-deck rules, 11 to 1 still leaves a house edge of about 10.36%.
“All pair bets are the same”
Player Pair, Banker Pair, Either Pair, Both Pairs, Perfect Pair, and branded products can have different conditions and paytables.
Session-Cost Example
A $10 pair wager repeated for 100 hands creates $1,000 of side-bet action.
At a 10.36% theoretical house edge:
Expected long-run loss = $1,000 × 10.36% = about $103.60
That figure does not predict a specific session. A player may hit several pairs or none. It shows why a small-looking side bet can materially increase the cost of a baccarat session.
