A progressive display can show $250,000 above a blackjack, baccarat, poker, or carnival-game table. That number is not the value of the main game and it is not the average return of the side bet.
A progressive side bet is a separate optional wager with its own:
- stake;
- qualifying outcomes;
- fixed prizes;
- progressive jackpot;
- contribution rules;
- reset amount;
- verification procedure.
The main wager can lose while the progressive wins, or the main wager can win while the progressive loses.
The meter is only one line in the paytable
Imagine a $1 progressive wager with this simplified return structure:

Small-award contribution = (1/20) × $5 = $0.25
Medium-award contribution = (1/2,000) × $250 = $0.125
Before the jackpot component, the wager returns an average of $0.375 per $1 in this simplified example.
If the meter is $100,000:
Jackpot contribution = (1/200,000) × $100,000 = $0.50
Total expected return = $0.375 + $0.50 = $0.875
House edge = 1 - 0.875 = 12.5%
If the meter reaches $125,000:
Jackpot contribution = $125,000 / 200,000 = $0.625
Total expected return = $1.00
Under these hypothetical assumptions, $125,000 is the break-even meter. Real games may include taxes, shared awards, qualification restrictions, envy bonuses, multiple jackpot tiers, or different probability models.
A compact break-even formula
Let:
B= wager amount;R= expected return from all non-jackpot outcomes;q= jackpot probability per wager;J= gross jackpot amount.
Break-even occurs when:
R + qJ = B
So:
Break-even Jackpot J* = (B - R) / q
The formula is useful only when R and q are known and the jackpot is paid as assumed. A large display without the probability cannot establish value.
How the meter grows
A contribution rate determines how much qualifying play increases the jackpot.
Meter Contribution
= Progressive Action × Contribution Rate
If players make $80,000 of qualifying $1 wagers and 3% feeds the meter:
$80,000 × 3% = $2,400 meter increase
The remaining wager amount is not necessarily casino profit. It supports fixed prizes, secondary jackpots, fees, taxes, and the game’s mathematical margin.

Local, linked, and multi-site progressives
A progressive may be:
- local: connected to one table or property;
- linked: fed by several games in one venue;
- multi-site: connected across several venues or systems;
- fixed or must-hit-by: subject to a defined award boundary;
- mystery: triggered without a conventional winning hand.
The display should identify the applicable jackpot and any sharing rule. If several players qualify simultaneously, the rules must explain whether each receives the full amount or whether the award is divided.
What happens after a trigger
A large table-game progressive commonly moves through several controls:
- dealer stops play and protects the cards or electronic record;
- floor supervisor confirms the wager and hand;
- surveillance reviews the event;
- system and meter records are checked;
- game rules and eligibility are verified;
- regulatory notification or independent validation occurs when required;
- payment and tax documentation are completed;
- the meter resets or transfers according to approved rules.

Five misunderstandings
“The meter must be paid soon.” A growing jackpot is not a countdown unless the approved game has a disclosed must-hit-by mechanism.
“A bigger jackpot makes every part of the bet better.” It raises only the jackpot component of expected return.
“The side bet improves the main game.” The wagers settle independently.
“If the display freezes, the last amount shown must be paid.” Malfunction and communication rules determine the response; the displayed figure may require validation.
“Someone else winning resets money that belonged to me.” Contributions buy chances under the rules, not ownership of a share of the meter.
The player-side test
Before making the wager, find:
- stake size;
- complete paytable;
- jackpot qualification;
- whether the meter is local or linked;
- reset amount;
- sharing rules;
- maximum award;
- malfunction language.
Then treat the wager as entertainment unless the full probability model supports a stronger claim. A visible six-figure meter can coexist with a high house edge because the jackpot event may be extremely rare.
