Where You See It
Four of a kind appears in draw poker, community-card poker, video poker, poker-based side bets, and carnival games that use five-card rankings. The important difference is how the final hand is formed.
In five-card draw, the player receives or draws to a five-card hand. In Texas Hold’em, the best five-card hand is selected from seven available cards. In video poker, the player holds and discards cards under a fixed paytable. A raw five-card-deck probability is therefore not automatically the same as a video-poker hit frequency, because the draw decision changes the final distribution.
Standard Poker Probability
There are 624 distinct five-card four-of-a-kind combinations in a 52-card deck:
- 13 choices for the rank of the quads;
- all four suits of that rank are required;
- 48 possible cards can serve as the fifth card.
The calculation is:
13 × 48 = 624 four-of-a-kind hands
There are 2,598,960 possible five-card combinations, so the probability of being dealt four of a kind in an unordered five-card hand is:
624 ÷ 2,598,960 = about 0.0240%, or roughly 1 in 4,165 hands.
That figure is useful for standard five-card probability. It should not be copied directly into a video-poker strategy discussion, because video poker includes a draw and strategy-dependent final outcomes.
Why It Matters in Video Poker
Four of a kind can carry a meaningful portion of a video-poker game’s long-run return. Two machines may display the same broad game family while assigning different values to quads.
In a conventional Jacks or Better paytable, all four-of-a-kind ranks may share one payout line. In Bonus Poker-style games, aces may pay more than other ranks. Double Bonus and Double Double Bonus games often split quads into several categories, such as:
- four aces;
- four 2s, 3s, or 4s;
- four 5s through kings;
- premium quads with a specified kicker.
The richer-looking quad awards are usually funded by reductions elsewhere in the paytable. A game can pay more for rare quads while paying less for common hands such as two pair, a full house, or a flush. The result may be similar overall return but much higher volatility.
Kicker Rules
A kicker is the fifth card beside the four matching ranks. In ordinary poker ranking, a kicker breaks ties only when two players somehow share the same quad rank through community cards. In some video-poker variants, the kicker directly changes the posted payout.
For example, a paytable may award a premium for four aces accompanied by a 2, 3, or 4. Another line may reward four 2s, 3s, or 4s with an ace through 4 kicker. The exact wording matters. “Four aces” and “four aces with a 2, 3, or 4” are not the same payout category.
Never rely on the game-family name alone. Read the displayed paytable before inserting money or credits.
Example: Paytable Contribution
Suppose a hypothetical video-poker game finishes with a particular quad category once in every 500 hands and pays 80 units for a one-unit wager.
The return contribution from that one category is approximately:
Probability × Total Return = (1 ÷ 500) × 81 = 0.162 units per unit wagered
The 81 includes the 80-unit win plus return of the original unit when the paytable is expressed “to 1.” Machine displays can present credits differently, so use the actual game convention.
The larger lesson is that expected return comes from every outcome, not just the largest award:
Total return = sum of each hand probability × its total payout
A spectacular quad line can coexist with a weak overall paytable.

From the casino side, four-of-a-kind awards involve more than recognizing four matching ranks. Staff and systems may need to confirm:
- the exact game and paytable version;
- the wager level and number of credits played;
- whether the machine requires maximum credits for a top award;
- the quad rank and any required kicker;
- progressive or bonus-meter conditions;
- whether the award triggers a machine lock or staff-paid jackpot workflow;
- whether tax or identification documentation is required under the applicable rules.
A dispute often starts when a player remembers the best advertised quad award but not the conditions attached to it. The machine’s active paytable, denomination, wager, and final hand are the controlling facts.

“All quads pay the same.”
False. Some games use one quad line; others divide quads by rank and kicker.
“Four of a kind is always one hand below a royal flush.”
Not exactly. A straight flush also ranks above four of a kind. A royal flush is the highest straight flush.
“The fifth card never matters.”
It may not change the basic poker category, but it can change a video-poker payout or break a community-card tie.
“A game with bigger quad payouts must have a better return.”
False. The supplier may reduce several more common payouts to fund the quad bonuses.
“Quads are due after a long dry spell.”
No. Previous misses do not force the next deal or draw to produce four of a kind.
Hard Truth
Four of a kind is memorable because it is rare. That rarity also makes it a poor hand to chase emotionally. Increasing the wager, abandoning correct holds, or extending a session does not make quads arrive on schedule.
A high-volatility paytable can produce long stretches without the premium hand that supports much of its advertised return. The theoretical percentage assumes correct strategy over a very large number of hands; it does not promise a smooth session.
