A six-line roulette bet covers six consecutive numbers arranged in two adjacent rows of three on the table layout. It is also called a double street. A standard winning wager pays 5 to 1: a 10-unit bet earns 50 units of profit, and the original 10-unit stake is returned separately.
The bet wins more often than a straight-up, split, street, or corner bet because it covers more pockets. It does not receive a better price. On a normal single-zero wheel, its house edge is 2.70%; on a normal double-zero wheel, it is 5.26%, the same standard edge as most other bets on those wheels.
What six numbers can be covered?
The two rows must touch on the printed 1–36 grid. Standard examples include:

A player cannot normally invent a six-number group such as 1, 5, 12, 19, 27, and 36 and call it one six-line wager. Those numbers do not form two contiguous streets. Covering them would require separate straight-up or other valid wagers.
The chip is placed on the outside intersection where the two street rows meet. It is not placed on the line between two individual numbers; that line would identify a split. The distinction can be only a few centimeters on a crowded layout, so centered placement matters.

Payout, total return, and net result
“5 to 1” describes net profit, not the total amount pushed back to the player.
For a stake of $12:
- net profit:
5 × $12 = $60; - original stake returned:
$12; - total chips returned:
$72; - change in bankroll from the wager:
+$60.
If the ball lands outside the six covered numbers, the full $12 loses. Zero and double zero are not part of any standard double street covering 1 through 36.

Exact probability by wheel type
Let:
W= number of winning pockets, which is 6;N= total pockets on the wheel.
The probability of a win is:

A six-line hit occurs roughly once in every 6.17 spins on a single-zero wheel on average, but that does not create a schedule. Ten misses in a row are possible; so are two wins close together. Spins remain separate trials on a fair wheel.
Deriving the expected value
For one unit on single-zero roulette:

$$EV=\frac{30-31}{37}=-\frac{1}{37}\approx-0.02703$$
The average loss is therefore about 0.027 units per unit wagered, or 2.70% of action.
On double-zero roulette:

$$EV=\frac{30-32}{38}=-\frac{2}{38}\approx-0.05263$$
A $20 double-street wager therefore has theoretical loss of about:
- single zero:
$20 × 0.02703 ≈ $0.54per spin; - double zero:
$20 × 0.05263 ≈ $1.05per spin.
That is a long-run average, not a prediction for one spin. One decision ends at either +$100 profit or -$20 on this example, not at -$0.54 or -$1.05.
Why broader coverage does not create better value
A straight-up bet covers one number and pays 35 to 1. A street covers three and pays 11 to 1. A six-line covers six and pays 5 to 1. As coverage increases, the payout decreases.
On single-zero roulette, compare the theoretical cycle:

Each standard bet loses one unit per 37 units of action in this simplified complete-wheel accounting. The six-line changes hit frequency and payout size, not the wheel’s standard price.

Multiple six-lines: count action, not covered numbers
Suppose a player places three separate $5 six-line wagers:
- 1–6;
- 13–18;
- 25–30.
The player covers 18 pockets, but total action is $15 per spin. If one covered pocket wins, one bet earns $25 profit while the other two lose $10, leaving $15 net profit. If an uncovered pocket lands, all three lose for -$15.
The expected loss on a single-zero wheel is:
$$15\times\frac{1}{37}\approx$0.41\text{ per spin}$$
Covering more numbers can produce more frequent winning spins, but it requires more money on the layout. Overlapping six-lines can also cause more than one wager to win on the same number, yet the overlap is purchased with another full stake. No arrangement removes zero from the denominator.
Placement and settlement controls
The Massachusetts roulette rules define the standard six-number wager as six consecutive numbers in two contiguous rows, selected by placing the wager on the outside common corner of those rows. The same rules list a minimum payout of 5 to 1 and state that settlement follows the wager’s position on the layout.
That creates several practical rules:
- Place the chip before betting closes. A late chip should not be accepted merely because the intended numbers are clear.
- Center it on the intersection. A chip touching only one street edge can be read as a three-number wager.
- Confirm called bets. When a dealer places a wager for a player, the player should verify the final position before the spin is closed.
- Know the chip value. Roulette non-value chips may have a table-specific assigned value.
- Do not move a wager after the outcome is known. Surveillance evidence is based on the pre-result position.
Some approved layouts include an optional “six numbers color wager.” That is not the ordinary double-street bet even though both cover six numbers. Its printed area and number group are defined by that specific layout. Read the table sign rather than relying only on the phrase “six numbers.”
Common misunderstandings
“It wins almost one spin in six, so a win is due”
The probability resets with each fair spin. A long sequence of misses does not increase the next-spin chance beyond 6 divided by the number of wheel pockets.
“Two streets should pay the sum of two 11-to-1 street bets”
A six-line is one six-number contract paying 5 to 1. Two separate street bets require two stakes. If one street wins, its 11-to-1 profit is reduced by the loss on the other street; the combined net result is equivalent to 5 to 1 on one unit per street.
Example: $10 on each of two adjacent streets creates $20 total action. One street wins $110 while the other loses $10, for $100 net profit. A single $20 six-line also earns $100 profit.
“La Partage protects this bet on zero”
La Partage normally applies only to qualifying even-money wagers, not inside bets such as a six-line. Check the exact house rule; do not assume a single-zero table returns half of every losing wager.
“The six numbers are adjacent on the wheel”
They are adjacent as two rows on the felt, not as six neighboring pockets around the physical wheel. Grid adjacency and wheel adjacency are different systems.
A sensible pre-bet check
Before placing a double street, identify:
- the exact six numbers;
- the wheel type and number of green pockets;
- the chip value and total amount at risk;
- the 5-to-1 net payout;
- whether the chip is centered on the correct row intersection;
- whether any unusual six-number option is printed on the layout;
- how many other wagers are active on the same spin.
A six-line bet is easy to understand once its contract is separated into four parts: six layout pockets, one stake, 5-to-1 profit, and every other wheel pocket as a loss.
