Roulette History

Roulette evolved from earlier European wheel games. Its history is shaped by the zero, casino competition, regional variants, and faster modern delivery.

Roulette did not appear in one fully formed moment. The modern game emerged in France from earlier wheel games, numbered layouts, and gambling traditions, then changed as casino operators refined the wheel and its house advantage. Blaise Pascal is often connected to the story, but the claim that he simply “invented roulette in 1655” is better treated as legend or influence than settled history.

The Name and the Basic Idea

The French word roulette means “little wheel.” The game combines a rotating numbered wheel, a ball, and a betting layout. Players wager before the ball settles in a pocket.

The modern wheel uses numbers 1 through 36 plus one or more green house pockets:

Before Modern Roulette

Historians connect roulette to several earlier games and devices rather than one direct ancestor. European gambling already used spinning wheels, numbered outcomes, even/odd games, and layouts resembling later roulette concepts.

By the late 18th century, recognizable roulette was being played in France. Historical accounts commonly cite descriptions of Paris games in the 1790s with both 0 and 00 reserved for the bank. That is much firmer ground than the popular story of a complete roulette game springing from Pascal’s workshop.

Pascal did experiment with perpetual-motion ideas in the 17th century, and his work is often linked to the wheel’s mechanical ancestry. The careful wording is: Pascal may have influenced the development of spinning-wheel mechanisms, but modern roulette evolved later through casino play.

The Blanc Brothers and Single Zero

François and Louis Blanc are closely associated with the commercial rise of the single-zero wheel in 19th-century Bad Homburg. Removing one house pocket made their game more attractive than competing double-zero wheels.

The mathematical effect is easy to see.

For an even-money bet on a single-zero wheel:

House Edge = 1 ÷ 37 ≈ 2.70%

For the same bet on a double-zero wheel:

House Edge = 2 ÷ 38 ≈ 5.26%

The single-zero game did not become fair. It offered a lower price for essentially the same experience, which was a powerful competitive advantage.

François Blanc later became central to the development of casino gaming in Monte Carlo. The association between Monte Carlo, European elegance, and single-zero roulette helped establish the version as the continental standard.

How Double Zero Became American

Double-zero roulette became the dominant form in the United States. The additional 00 increased the house edge while preserving the familiar payouts.

American layouts and wheel sequences also developed distinct forms. The result was not only a different mathematical product but a recognizable regional identity:

  • European roulette: one zero, 2.70% basic house edge.
  • American roulette: zero and double zero, 5.26% basic house edge on most bets.
  • French roulette: usually single zero, with traditional terminology and sometimes player-favorable rules such as la partage or en prison on even-money bets.

The history matters because “roulette” is not one price. The wheel type and zero rule determine how expensive the game is over time.

French Rules and the Lower Edge

Some French roulette tables apply a rule when zero appears on an even-money wager:

  • La partage: half the losing even-money bet is returned.
  • En prison: the bet is held for the next spin under the table’s rule.

With standard la partage, the effective house edge on qualifying even-money bets can fall to about 1.35%.

These rules show how casino competition shaped roulette. Operators could make the game more appealing without removing the house advantage.

The Wheel Became a Casino Symbol

Roulette succeeded because it is easy to watch and visually public. The dealer spins the wheel, the ball travels in the opposite direction, betting closes, and everyone sees the outcome.

Operationally, one table can serve many players making different bets at the same time. The layout supports tiny outside bets, high-value straight-up wagers, announced bets, and sector bets without changing the underlying spin.

From Mechanical Wheels to Electronic Roulette

The core live game remained recognizable, but delivery changed.

Traditional live roulette

A dealer controls the spin, chips, payouts, and game pace. Players stand or sit around one physical table.

Rapid or stadium roulette

One live wheel can feed many electronic betting terminals. Players use touchscreens while a dealer or presenter operates the wheel.

Automated roulette

A machine launches the ball and records the result without a traditional dealer at the wheel.

Online live-dealer roulette

A physical wheel is streamed to remote players. Bets are accepted digitally, then closed before the result.

Random-number-generator roulette

Software produces the result without a physical wheel. The approved game rules, testing, and displayed return information become central.

Technology changed speed, capacity, presentation, and recordkeeping. It did not change the basic equation: expected cost depends on house edge multiplied by total action.

Speed Is Part of the Modern History

A live table may produce roughly 25 to 45 decisions per hour depending on staffing, player volume, chip handling, and procedure. Electronic versions can be much faster.

Myths That Grew Around the Game

Roulette history attracts stories because the wheel looks mysterious.

“Pascal invented the casino game by accident”

This is widely repeated but too certain. Pascal belongs in the mechanical origin story; recognizable casino roulette developed later.

“The numbers total 666, so the game has a supernatural origin”

The numbers 1 through 36 do total 666. That arithmetic produced the nickname “the Devil’s wheel,” not evidence of supernatural design.

“The Blanc brothers made a deal with the devil”

That is folklore attached to François Blanc’s success and the 666 story.

“The American wheel added 00 only to cheat players”

Double-zero roulette is a clearly defined higher-edge version. The important issue is not secret cheating but whether the player understands the posted wheel and price.

The Mathematics That Survived Every Era

For a single-number bet on European roulette:

  • win probability = 1/37;
  • loss probability = 36/37;
  • profit on a win = 35 units;
  • loss on a miss = 1 unit.

Expected Value = (1/37 × 35) − (36/37 × 1) = −1/37 ≈ −2.70%

For American roulette:

Expected Value = (1/38 × 35) − (37/38 × 1) = −2/38 ≈ −5.26%

The wheel design changed, casinos moved, and technology accelerated, but the zero remained the source of the standard house advantage.

What History Teaches a Player

The useful lesson is not a secret system. It is product comparison.

  1. Count the green pockets.
  2. Check whether la partage or en prison applies.
  3. Confirm the exact table limits and chip rules.
  4. Notice the pace of play.
  5. Treat every spin as a new event.
  6. Compare total hourly action, not only the size of one bet.

A single-zero wheel is normally cheaper than a double-zero wheel. A slow table is normally cheaper per hour than a rapid terminal at the same average wager. Those are real differences. A pattern on the scoreboard is not.
