Understand exactly what a roulette street covers, how its 11-to-1 payout is priced on each wheel, and how to place and check the bet at a live table.

A roulette street bet covers one horizontal row of three numbers, such as 1-2-3, 16-17-18, or 34-35-36. It pays 11 to 1 when any of those three numbers wins. The payout does not change with the wheel, but the probability does: extra zero pockets make the same bet more expensive.

The street is useful to understand because it shows the basic roulette tradeoff clearly. It hits more often than a one-number or two-number wager, pays less when it wins, and retains the wheel’s normal house edge.

Where the chip goes

The numbered layout is arranged in twelve rows of three. A standard street chip is placed on the outer edge of one row, centered beside its three numbers. A chip beside 10-11-12 therefore covers exactly those numbers.

That position matters. Move the chip slightly toward a corner and it may appear to be a four-number corner bet. Move it onto the line between two rows and it may appear to be a six-line bet. At a crowded table, announce the numbers to the dealer if the intended position is not obvious.

The standard streets are:

Zero is not part of the first street. Wagers such as 0-1-2 or 0-2-3 are commonly called trios and use different chip positions. On a double-zero layout, the 0-00-1-2-3 wager is the five-number or top-line bet. Those are zero-area combinations, not ordinary streets.

Payout, profit, and total return

A winning street pays 11 units of profit for every unit staked. The original stake is also returned.

For stake (S):

If a player places $10 on 19-20-21 and 20 wins, the profit is $110 and the original $10 comes back, for $120 returned in total. If any other pocket wins, the $10 is lost.

This profit-versus-return distinction is a frequent source of confusion. The posted 11 to 1 is not the total amount handed back. The broader roulette payout guide explains the same convention for every standard wager.

Exact probability on each wheel

A street always has three winning pockets. The denominator changes with the wheel.

The expected value of a one-unit street is:

[ EV=P(W)\times 11-P(L)\times 1 ]

where (P(W)) is the probability of a winning pocket and (P(L)) is the probability of every losing pocket.

For a single-zero wheel:

The expected loss is therefore 0.027027 units per unit wagered, or 2.7027%.

On double-zero roulette:

On triple-zero roulette:

The same 11-to-1 sign can therefore represent three very different prices. Wheel selection matters more than choosing one ordinary street over another.

Why 11 to 1 is below true odds

True odds against a single-zero street are 34 losing pockets to 3 winning pockets:

[ 34:3=11.333\ldots:1 ]

A mathematically fair payout would be 11⅓ to 1, not 11 to 1. The missing one-third of a unit on each theoretical win produces the single-zero edge.

On a double-zero wheel the true odds are 35:3, or 11.6667 to 1. On a triple-zero wheel they are 36:3, or exactly 12 to 1. The casino still pays only 11 to 1. The gap widens as zero pockets are added.

Street versus nearby inside bets

A street is not inherently better than another ordinary inside bet on the same wheel. It changes the shape of results.

Covering more numbers raises the chance of receiving a payout but reduces the amount won. For the standard combinations above, the long-run edge remains the same on a given wheel. The roulette bets explained page maps all chip positions; the roulette odds guide compares their probabilities.

A street can still feel less volatile than a straight-up wager because wins occur three times as often. That does not mean a short session is predictable. Ten, twenty, or even fifty consecutive misses are possible without anything unusual occurring.

Overlapping streets do not become one better bet

Suppose a player stakes $5 on 1-2-3 and $5 on 4-5-6. The player now has $10 at risk and covers six numbers, but the wagers are settled separately.

If 2 wins:

  • the first street earns $55 profit;
  • its $5 stake is returned;
  • the second $5 street loses;
  • net session result for the spin is +$50.

If any other number wins, both streets lose and the result is -$10.

This is economically similar to six-number coverage, but it is not necessarily identical to one six-line chip because table minimums, chip positions, and payout handling can differ. More importantly, adding streets increases total money wagered. It does not dilute the house edge on each dollar.

The cost is driven by total action

Expected loss is:

A player who makes a $10 street on 60 single-zero spins puts $600 into action:

That is a long-run average, not a forecast for the next session. The actual result may be far above or below it because the wager is volatile. The expected-loss calculator is useful for comparing stake size and spin count before playing.

Hit frequency is not a promise

The probability of at least one street hit over several spins is useful for understanding the wager, but it should not be mistaken for a guarantee. If (q) is the probability of missing on one spin and (n) is the number of independent spins, then:

For a single-zero street, (q=34/37). Over ten spins:

That still leaves roughly a 42.9% chance of missing all ten. On twenty spins, the probability of at least one hit rises to about 81.6%, but a hit does not automatically make the sequence profitable. One $10 win returns $120, yet twenty $10 wagers cost $200 in total action. A sequence with one win and nineteen losses ends $80 down.

The number of wins needed to finish ahead depends on the number of spins and the stake pattern. With equal one-unit streets, each win contributes 11 units and each loss removes one. If (w) is the number of wins in (n) spins, net result is:

After 20 equal bets, two wins produce (R=24-20=+4) units, while one win produces (-8) units. This is why “I hit the street” and “the session was profitable” are different statements.

Live-table checks before the ball is spun

A street is simple once the chip position is clear, but four practical details prevent most disputes:

  1. Confirm the wheel. A double- or triple-zero wheel has a higher edge even though the street payout looks unchanged.
  2. Check the inside minimum. Some tables apply a total minimum across inside wagers; others require a minimum per chip or per bet.
  3. Use the table’s value chips correctly. Non-value roulette chips belong to one player and receive their value when purchased.
  4. Stop touching the layout when betting closes. A late adjustment can be refused even when the intended street seems obvious.

When the ball settles, the dealer marks the winning number, clears losing chips, and pays winning inside bets according to the house procedure. Players should wait until settlement is complete before reaching across the layout.

What the street bet actually changes

The street changes three things: how many pockets win, how often a payout occurs, and how large that payout is. It does not make a particular row more likely because it is overdue, adjacent on the layout, or close to the previous winner on the wheel.

Rows are a betting-layout convenience. The numbers 1-2-3 sit together on the felt but are not adjacent in the same order on the wheel. Previous spins do not alter the three winning pockets on the next independent spin.

Choose a street only because its coverage and volatility suit the amount you are prepared to risk. Choose the wheel by price. A single-zero street and a double-zero street look almost identical on the layout, but the second one costs nearly twice as much in expected loss per dollar wagered.

Play smart. Gambling involves real financial risk. If the game stops being entertainment, it's time to stop playing.
