Working tool

Shift sleep planner

Build a protected main sleep window and optional pre-shift nap around a casino roster, commuting time, and preparation needs.

Enter one repeating shift

Use the times you normally leave work and start the next shift, not only the printed roster. The planner does not save your entries.

How to use the result

Treat the main sleep window as protected time. Account for actual overtime, table closure, handover, transport delay, household noise, and the time needed to become alert after waking.

A planned nap may add sleep before the shift, but the planner removes it when the available interval is too tight to preserve a separate main sleep window and preparation period.

Health and safety boundary

This tool arranges time; it does not diagnose insomnia, shift-work disorder, or fitness to drive. NIOSH advises night workers to protect as much sleep as possible and notes that planned naps can support alertness. Persistent sleep difficulty or unsafe fatigue deserves professional assessment.

Read NIOSH guidance for night and evening shifts.

Never use a calculated schedule as proof that driving or working is safe. If you are severely sleepy, follow local safety procedures and arrange a safer alternative.

Transparent methodology

How to interpret this tool

How it works

The planner places commute-home and wind-down time after the entered shift, then fits the sleep target before pre-shift preparation and the return commute. If a requested nap cannot fit while preserving a separate main sleep window, the nap is removed.

What the result means

The result tells you whether the schedule you entered contains enough time for your own sleep target and shows any shortfall in minutes.

What it cannot tell you

It cannot diagnose a sleep disorder, measure sleep quality, determine fitness to drive, or prove that a roster is medically safe.

Worked example

If your target is 7.5 hours but the usable window fits only 6.5 hours, the tool reports a 60-minute shortfall rather than calling the roster safe or unsafe.
