Colombia offers a useful advantage to casino job seekers: the regulator provides a public way to check whether a localized gaming establishment is authorized.
Coljuegos regulates casinos and similar venues within the juegos localizados system. If an establishment does not appear in the regulator’s authorized information, Coljuegos tells the public to treat it as illegal.
For workers, that makes legality easier to test than in many markets. The harder work is evaluating the roster, legal surcharges, city costs and—if you are foreign—the visa tied to the actual job.
Use South America to compare Colombia with Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Suriname.
Check the venue before sharing personal documents
Ask the recruiter for the legal operator, establishment name, city, address and company that will employ you.
Then check the establishment through Coljuegos. The regulator explains that localized gaming requires prior authorization and a concession contract and provides a public authorized-establishment lookup.
A social-media page, hotel logo or photos of gaming tables are not enough. If the venue cannot be verified, pause before sending a passport, criminal record or banking information.
Operator authorization is not a portable dealer licence
The public Coljuegos system centres on the operator and concession rather than offering an ordinary applicant one nationwide dealer card to obtain independently.
Casinos can still impose rigorous employee controls. Dealers may face identity checks, references, auditions and game-protection training. Cage, surveillance, security, management and compliance staff can expect deeper checks because of access to cash, systems or sensitive information.
Ask which checks are required by regulation and which are internal company policy.
The 19:00 night threshold matters to casino payroll
Law 2466 of 2025 defines daytime work as 06:00 to 19:00 and night work as 19:00 to 06:00. For a casino, that is not a small technicality: many ordinary table shifts cross the night threshold.
Request a sample roster and a sample payroll calculation. A shift beginning at 18:00 can contain both daytime and night hours, and the payroll should make clear how the applicable surcharge is handled.
Do not compare two offers only by monthly base salary.
The normal weekly ceiling is 42 hours
The labour reform framework confirms a maximum ordinary working week of 42 hours, subject to lawful distribution rules.
Casino rosters can still be organized across evenings, weekends and holidays, but the contract should show how normal hours, overtime and rest are structured.
Ask what happens when a game runs past scheduled relief, when a count or closing procedure extends a shift, or when mandatory pre-shift briefings are required.
Rest-day work needs a separate calculation
Casino demand is often strongest on weekends and holidays. Colombia’s reform phases changes to the surcharge for work on the mandatory rest day, and the rate reached 90% from 1 July 2026 under the scheduled transition.
Ask which day is designated as your weekly rest day and how work on that day is recorded. Do not assume every Sunday line on a roster will be treated identically without understanding the contract and the lawful rest arrangement.
A transparent employer can show the formula on a payslip example.
The 2026 statutory minimum is COP 1,750,905
Decree 159 of 19 February 2026 set a transitory 2026 monthly legal minimum of COP 1,750,905 while the related court process remains unresolved.
That figure is legal context, not a suitable salary target for an experienced casino employee.
Compare the full package: guaranteed base, night work, overtime, rest-day and holiday surcharges, transport, meals, statutory contributions, bonuses and tips. A higher base can still produce worse net income if another employer applies the legal additions more clearly.
City choice changes the value of the same salary
Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Cartagena and other casino markets have different rents, commuting patterns and tourism demand.
For a night employee, test the actual route after closing. Public transport that works during normal office hours may not cover a 02:30 or 04:00 release.
Ask whether the casino provides late-night transport or a transport allowance and whether it reaches your planned neighbourhood. The cheapest apartment can become expensive if every shift requires a private ride.
Tips need a property rule, not an estimate
Ask whether gaming tips are permitted, individual or pooled. Clarify whether supervisors participate, whether poker follows a different system, how often distributions occur and how absences affect a share.
Treat tips as variable. Use guaranteed payroll income when deciding what rent you can afford.
The dealer income and tips guide provides a useful way to separate stable compensation from a good-month estimate.
Spanish is essential for operational progression
English can help in tourism-facing properties, but casino operations, HR and compliance are fundamentally Spanish-speaking.
Dealers need to understand guest disputes and supervisor instructions. Floor supervisors need to write or explain incidents. Surveillance and compliance staff need precise records.
An international applicant should ask whether game tests, manuals and incident forms are Spanish-only. For management roles, professional written Spanish is often more important than conversational guest English.
Foreign workers need the correct visa before starting
Colombia’s visa system includes the Migrant (M) Worker category for foreigners employed by a Colombian legal entity under a work contract.
The official requirements include a contract summary, employer explanation of the role and the foreigner’s suitability, financial evidence from the employer, and qualification or experience evidence as applicable.
The resulting permission is tied to the approved position, entity, profession or activity. It is not a general open work authorization.
A visitor or business visa is not a shortcut
Colombia’s official visa guidance states that tourism and business visitor categories do not authorize ordinary employment with a Colombian entity.
A recruiter saying “enter first as a tourist and we will change it after you start” should therefore be treated cautiously. Ask what visa category will authorize the casino work and when you may legally begin duties.
Keep the visa conditions and employment contract aligned from the beginning.
The employer must be able to justify a foreign hire
The Migrant Worker visa requirements ask the employer to explain the foreign applicant’s suitability and why a Colombian citizen is not being hired for the activity.
That makes specialist experience more credible than a generic entry-level application. Senior table-games experience, training capability, surveillance systems knowledge, compliance expertise or a strategically useful language profile can create a stronger case.
A foreign recruit should ask the employer exactly what specialist value it is putting in the visa application.
Social security and immigration reporting are separate from casino licensing
A legal casino concession does not automatically make every employment arrangement compliant.
The employer and foreign worker must also follow Colombian labour, social-security and immigration-reporting obligations. Ask when registration occurs and what documents you will receive.
A legal property plus an informal off-payroll job is still a risky arrangement.
Multi-property operators can improve the career path
An operator with several authorized venues may provide more opportunities for promotion or transfer than a standalone property.
Ask whether dealers can move into floor supervision, training, cage, surveillance, slots, compliance or operations management. Ask for examples from the last year, not just a promise that internal promotion exists.
For experienced staff, clarify whether a transfer between establishments changes the employment entity or foreign-worker authorization.
Compare the offer with a sample payslip
Before accepting, request a realistic payroll example based on the proposed roster.
It should show the guaranteed base and, where applicable, night, overtime, rest-day and holiday additions, employee deductions and any transport or meal benefit. Then compare that net figure with housing and commuting costs in the actual city.
This is far more useful than a recruiter’s “you can make up to” figure.
Ask HR to explain the roster in money, not only hours
A 24-hour casino can present a roster that looks simple while the payroll calculation is not. Ask HR to take one real week and show which hours are ordinary daytime, ordinary night, overtime, rest-day or holiday work. Then ask when each addition appears on the payslip.
This also exposes whether pre-shift briefings, closing procedures and mandatory cash-outs are being counted properly. If employees are routinely expected to arrive early or leave late without that time appearing anywhere, the headline salary is not the full employment picture.
The best comparison between two Colombian offers is therefore a roster-plus-payslip comparison, not a base-salary comparison.
A practical Colombia offer checklist
Before saying yes, verify:
- Is the establishment authorized by Coljuegos?
- What company is the legal employer?
- What is guaranteed base salary?
- How are night hours after 19:00 paid?
- How are overtime and rest-day shifts recorded?
- What are the tip rules?
- Is transport provided after late shifts?
- What are the social-security deductions and registrations?
- If I am foreign, which visa category will authorize this exact job?
- What specialist need is the employer using to justify the foreign hire?
- What changes if I transfer to another venue or company?
Colombia’s public legality checks make the first stage of due diligence relatively easy. The strongest candidates go further and verify the payroll formula, real city costs, legal employer and immigration conditions before committing.
